TRIP ODOMETER RESET OPERATION W/DIGITAL INSTRUMENT CLUSTER

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1985-1989 C WITH DIGITAL INSTRUMENT CLUSTERS

Some 1985-1989 DeVilles and Fleetwoods equipped with Digital Instrument Clusters may exhibit a condition where the trip odometer in English mode rolls over (resets to zero) at 621 miles, or in Metric mode resets to zero at 1609 kilometers. The speedometer and season odometer are unaffected.

This is a normal condition and does not require repair or replacement of the Digital Instrument Cluster. The trip odometer rollover criteria is dependent upon the display mode (English or Metric) and the number of times that the reset button is pressed. The trip odometer reset function works as follows:

In English Mode an odd number of reset button presses will cause the trip odometer to rollover at 999.9 miles distance. An even number of reset button presses will cause the trip odometer to rollover at 621 miles (999.9 kilometers).

Pressing the reset key one, three, or five times in English mode will cause the display to reset to 0 and the trip odometer will rollover at 999.9 miles. If the customer selects Metric mode without resetting, the trip odometer will rollover at 1609 kilometers.

Pressing the reset key two, four, or six times in English mode will cause the display to reset to 0and the trip odometer will rollover at 621 miles. If the customer selects Metric mode without resetting, the trip odometer will rollover at 999.9 kilometers.

In Metric Mode an odd number of reset button presses will cause the trip odometer to rollover at 999.9 kilometers distance. An even number of reset button presses will cause the trip odometer to rollover at 1609 kilometers (999.9 miles).

Pressing the reset key one, three, or five times in Metric mode will cause the display to reset to 0 and the trip odometer will rollover at 999.9 kilometers. If the customer selects English mode without resetting, the trip odometer will rollover at 621 miles.

Pressing the reset key two, four, or six times in Metric mode will cause the display to reset to 0 and the trip odometer will rollover at 1609 kilometers (999.9 miles). If the customer selects English mode without resetting, the trip odometer will rollover at 999.9 miles.

Therefore, in order for the trip odometer to always rollover at 999.9 miles distance, the customer should only reset the trip odometer to zero with one button press while in the English display mode. In order for the Metric display to rollover at 999.9 kilometers distance, the customer should only reset the trip odometer to zero with one button press while in the Metric display mode. Owners who comment on the rollover condition should be made aware of this procedure.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
