NOISE FROM POWER STEERING ALIGNSHAFT STONE SHIELD

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1989-90 D

Some 1989-1990 Broughams may experience a moan-type noise while turning the steering wheel. This condition may be caused by an improperly aligned intermediate shaft stone shield. To verify that the stone shield is the source of the noise, raise the car and turn the steering wheel without the engine running. If the noise is caused by the stone shield, you should be able to eliminate it by sliding the stone shield off of the gear.

To repair this condition use the following procedure:

1. Raise car.

2. Make sure the stone shield is not being pushed out of place by the ABS brake lines or other components.

3. Disconnect stone shield from the intermediate shaft and slide rearward.

4. Lubricate with 3M silicone, P/N 08936 or equivalent, inside of shield as shown in Figure 1.

5. File sharp edge of intermediate shaft as shown in Figure 1.

6. Reinstall stone shield.

7. Turn wheel to verify the noise is gone.

8. Lower car.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
