CAMPAIGN: ENGINE OIL COOLER HOSE SEPARATION/LOSS OF PRESS.

SUBJECT: 1990 BROUGHAM MODELS WITH 5.7 LITER ENGINE: ENGINE OIL COOLER HOSE SEPARATION

BULLETIN NUMBER: 90-C-2

DATE: APRIL, 1990

CONDITION

CADILLAC HAS DETERMINED THAT CERTAIN 1990 BROUGHAMS WITH 5.7 LITER ENGINES MAY EXPERIENCE ENGINE OIL COOLER HOSE FITTING SEPARATION FROM THE OIL COOLER HOSE. THIS CONDITION WILL RESULT IN THE LOSS OF OIL PRESSURE POSSIBLY CAUSING ENGINE DAMAGE.

TO PREVENT THIS CONDITION FROM OCCURRING, DEALERS WILL BE REQUIRED TO REPLACE BOTH INLET AND OUTLET ENGINE OIL COOLER HOSES ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES AS PER THE VEHICLES INVOLVED AND SERVICE PROCEDURE SECTIONS OF THIS BULLETIN.

VEHICLES INVOLVED

ALL 1990 BROUGHAMS WITH 5.7 LITER ENGINES (OPTION CODE L05), WITHIN THE FOLLOWING VIN RANGE, REQUIRE THIS CAMPAIGN (CADILLAC RECORDS INDICATE THAT A TOTAL OF 12,294 VEHICLES ARE AFFECTED).

ALL VEHICLES INDICATED ON YOUR DEALER LIST REQUIRE THIS CAMPAIGN. OTHER SUSPECT VEHICLES SHOULD BE CHECKED FOR CAMPAIGN INVOLVEMENT UTILIZING THE VEHICLE INFORMATION SERVICE SYSTEM(VISS).

OWNER NOTIFICATION

OWNERS OF VEHICLES AFFECTED BY THIS CAMPAIGN WILL BE NOTIFIED BY LETTER FROM CADILLAC MOTOR CAR COMPANY. A COPY OF THE OWNER LETTER IS ATTACHED.

DEALER LIST

A LIST OF VEHICLES INVOLVED, WHICH OUR RECORDS INDICATE WERE SOLD BY OR SHIPPED TO YOU, IS ENCLOSED FOR YOUR FOLLOW-UP. THIS LISTING CONTAINS OWNER NAMES AND ADDRESSES OBTAINED FROM CADILLAC DELIVERY RECORDS. YOU ARE URGED TO LIMIT THE USE OF THIS LIST TO THE FOLLOW-UP NECESSARY TO COMPLETE THIS CAMPAIGN. IF NO LIST IS ENCLOSED, NONE OF THE SUSPECT VEHICLES ARE KNOWN TO BE IN YOUR AREA.

DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY

DEALERS ARE TO SERVICE ALL VEHICLE INVOLVED IN THIS CAMPAIGN, AT NO CHARGE TO OWNERS, REGARDLESS OF MILEAGE, AGE OF VEHICLE, OR OWNERSHIP.

WHENEVER A VEHICLE SUBJECT TO THIS CAMPAIGN IS TAKEN INTO NEW OR USED CAR INVENTORY, DEALERS ARE TO TAKE THE STEPS NECESSARY TO BE SURE THE CAMPAIGN CORRECTION HAS BEEN MADE BEFORE RESELLING THE VEHICLE.

DEALERS ARE TO CONTACT THE OWNERS OF THE VEHICLES INDICATED ON THEIR DEALER LIST AND ARRANGE FOR THE CAMPAIGN CORRECTION TO BE PERFORMED.

IN ADDITION, DEALERS ARE TO PERFORM THE CAMPAIGN ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES AS THEY ARE BROUGHT IN FOR ANY KIND OF SERVICE UNTIL ALL VEHICLES HAVE BEEN CORRECTED.

PARTS INFORMATION

THE PARTS REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THIS CAMPAIGN SHOULD BE OBTAINED FROM GMSPO. A DESCRIPTION IS PROVIDED BELOW:

03522770 OIL COOLER OUTLET HOSE (LOWER) 1 PER VEHICLE

AN INITIAL SUPPLY OF THESE PARTS IS BEING FORWARDED TO EACH DEALER THROUGH THE GMSPO CAMPAIGN PARTS PRE-SHIP PROGRAM. ADDITIONAL PARTS REQUIREMENTS SHOULD BE ORDERED AS DESCRIBED ABOVE.

IF THERE IS DIFFICULTY OBTAINING THESE PARTS USING NORMAL ORDERING PROCEDURES, DEALERS MAY PLACE A C.I.O. USING ADVISE CODE "2" WITH NO SPECIAL INSTRUCTION CODE. THE PARTS MAY ALSO BE ORDERED ON A V.I.P. ORDER, HOWEVER, UNLESS PRIOR ZONE APPROVAL IS OBTAINED, DEALERS WILL BE REQUIRED TO ABSORB ANY SURCHARGE INVOLVED UNDER THE V.I.P.SYSTEM.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

NOTICE: REFER TO THE FOLLOWING ILLUSTRATION FOR THIS SERVICE PROCEDURE. NOTE HOSE ROUTINGS AND USE BACK-UP WRENCH AS INDICATED.

1. OPEN HOOD.

2. DISCONNECT INLET AND OUTLET OIL COOLER HOSE ASSEMBLIES FROM RADIATOR TANK.

3. RAISE VEHICLE ON HOIST.

4. DISCONNECT INLET AND OUTLET OIL COOLER HOSE ASSEMBLIES FROM OIL FILTER ADAPTER.

5. REMOVE ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET AND DISCARD HOSES.

IMPORTANT: HAND START THREADS AT ALL CONNECTIONS TAKING PARTICULAR CARE TO AVOID CROSS THREADING.

6. CONNECT NEW INLET AND OUTLET OIL COOLER HOSE ASSEMBLIES TO OIL FILTER ADAPTER. TIGHTEN CONNECTIONS TO 44 NM (32 FT. LBS.)*

7. REINSTALL ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET. FAILURE TO INSTALL ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET MAY DAMAGE HOSES.

8. LOWER VEHICLE.

9. CONNECT NEW INLET AND OUTLET OIL COOLER HOSE ASSEMBLIES TO RADIATOR TANK. TIGHTEN CONNECTIONS TO 44 NM (32 FT LBS.)*

10. CHECK ENGINE OIL LEVEL AND FILL TO PROPER LEVEL IF NECESSARY.

11. START ENGINE AND CHECK ALL CONNECTIONS FOR LEAKS. LEAKING FITTINGS CANNOT BE CORRECTED BY APPLYING MORE TORQUE THAN SPECIFIED.

12. INSTALL CAMPAIGN COMPLETION LABEL.

13. CLOSE HOOD.

* THESE TORQUE VALUES DIFFER FROM THOES SPECIFIED IN THE 1990 BROUGHAM SERVICE INFORMATION MANUAL (SECTION 6A4). PLEASE UPDATE ALL COPIES.

CAMPAIGN COMPLETION LABEL

UPON COMPLETION OF THIS CAMPAIGN, A CAMPAIGN LABEL (CAT NO S-1015) TO BE AFFIXED ON A CLEAN, DRY SURFACE OF THE RADIATOR SUPPORT TIE BAR IN AN AREA CLEARLY VISIBLE WHEN THE HOOD IS RAISED. EACH LABEL PROVIDES SPACE TO PRINT IN INK (OR TYPE) COMPAIGN NUMBER 90-C-2 AND YOUR FIVE-DIGIT CADILLAC DEALER CODE. DEALERS ARE TO TAKE STEPS NECESSARY TO ENSURE THAT THE NUMBERS ARE PROPERLY RECORDED ON THE LABEL.

CREDIT

CREDIT FOR THIS CAMPAIGN WILL BE ISSUED UPON RECEIPT OF A PROPERLY PREPARED WARRANTY CLAIM AS FOLLOWS:

** PARTS ALLOWANCE SHOULD BE TOTAL OF THE CURRENT GMSPO NET PLUS 30% OF ALL PARTS REQUIRED FOR THE REPAIR,PLUS BULK MATERIAL COST FOR REQUIRED ENGINE OIL.
