Some 1990 Broughams may exhibit a noise when driving over road dips or potholes. The noise may be caused by the U-joint contacting the transmission support crossmember. If the U-joint contacts the support, there may be a witness mark on the crossmember. To repair this condition use the following procedure:
1. Verify that the U-joint has contacted the transmission crossmember.
2. Replace transmission mount with P/N #22111684. The mounting stud must be installed with the offset toward the front of car. Refer to Figure 1.
3. Shim the transmission mount with the appropriate number of shims, P/N #1254001, until a 2 degree U-joint angle (front and rear) is achieved. Refer to Cadillac Service Information Manual, Section 4A, for proper procedure. If more than two shims are required, also replace both mounting bolts with a longer bolt, P/N #376359.
4. Torque the transmission mounting bolts to 54 N-m (40 ft.lbs.).
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
