HARSH 1-2 SHIFT ADJUST TV CABLE

SUBJECT: HARSH 1-2 SHIFT

MODELS AFFECTED: 1993 FLEETWOODS (RWD) WITH HYDRA-MATIC 4L60 (WITHOUT V4U COACH BUILDER EQUIPMENT OPTION)

Some 1993 Fleetwoods (RWD) equipped with the Hydra-Matic 4L60 (RPO MD8) transaxle, without V4U coach builder equipment option, may experience a condition of a harsh 1-2 upshift.

This condition may be caused by an improper TV cable adjustment.

To correct this condition perform the following procedure (refer to Figure 1):

1. Remove the outer cover.

2. Remove the foam splash shield.

3. Remove the inner cover.

4. Depress the button on the accelerator control cable adjustor assembly and slide cable out to fully extended position. Release button.

5. Repeat step 4 for the accelerator pedal cable.

6. Flip toggle switch up on TV cable (releases it to the non-adjusted position). The cable should extend some when first released.

7. Measure 33mm (1-3/8") from the solid end of an 1/8" drill bit and wrap several layers of tape around the shaft.

8. Insert the drill bit, grooved side up, through the adjustment hole in the cams until it rests on the tape. If the drill bit drops too low (past the tape), it will mesh with the adjustor assembly gear and bind up the assembly preventing an accurate TV cable setting and possibly causing damage to the gear.

9. Insert torque wrench with 1/4" drive extension through the round hole in the top of the first pulley and into the square hole of the second pulley.

10. Turn assembly using the torque wrench until a torque reading of 4 Nm (35 lbs. in.) is achieved. The accelerator and accelerator control cables should click some (indicating they are adjusting) before achieving the 4 Nm setting.

IMPORTANT- Do not exceed 5 Nm any time during the adjustment procedure, even after locking in the TV cable. If 5 Nm is exceeded, the accelerator cables will be incorrectly adjusted and the procedure must be repeated from step 4.

11. Holding the torque wrench at the 4 Nm setting, flip the toggle switch on the TV cable down.

IMPORTANT- Do not relax the pressure on the torque wrench before locking in the TV cable with the toggle switch or the setting will be incorrect. In this case release the TV cable again, carefully return the torque wrench to 4 Nm, and flip down the toggle switch. If either of the accelerator cable adjustors click while returning to 4 Nm, start again at step 4.

12. Remove the torque wrench and drill bit.

13. Replace the inner cover.

14. Replace the foam splash shield.

15. Replace the outer cover.

16. Install a Tech 1 with mass storage cartridge to the vehicle. Refer to Section 6E in the Service Information Manual for Tech 1 hookup.

17. Fully depress the accelerator pedal. There should be one or two more adjustment clicks from the accelerator cables.

18. With key on and engine off, fully depress the accelerator pedal again while monitoring throttle angle on the Tech 1. The throttle angle must go to 90 percent or above. If the throttle angle is below 90 percent, repeat the TV cable adjustment procedure.

NOTE: Leaving the maximum throttle angle below 90 percent win prevent the oil life index from resetting during the reset procedure.

For warranty purposes use Labor Operation T6719 at .3 hour.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition.
