EXHAUST MOAN OR BUZZ REWORK EXHAUST BRACKET

MODELS AFFECTED: 1985 FWD DEVILLE AND FLEETWOOD

Some 1985 FWD Devilles and Fleetwoods may experience an exhaust moan or buzz at operating temperatures after encountering wet driving conditions. This condition may be caused by interference between the exhaust hanger mounting bracket and the intermediate floor pan shield. The exhaust hanger mounting bracket is located directly behind the catalytic converter.

When sprayed with water, the exhaust system may contract forcing the bracket into contact with the intermediate shield. The moan or buzz will only be heard after the exhaust system has been soaked with water.

This condition may be corrected by removing the top portion of the bracket located above the welded area, refer to Figure 1. The bracket should be cut parallel to the intermediate shield to provide maximum clearance.

For warranty purposes, use labor Operation T6100 at .3 hour.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
