THM 440-T4 SERVICE PROGRAMS INFORMATION

Since the introduction of the 1985 De Ville/Fleetwood, THM440-T4 automatic transaxles requiring major internal repairs have been replaced through a Hydra-Matic Division Exchange program. This program was discontinued effective August 26, 1985; in order that dealer service needs continue to be met, a new THM440-T4 service program has been developed which offers dealers the option of either performing 440-T4 internal repairs or transaxle assembly replacement with a Service Replacement Transaxle Assembly (SRTA). All components necessary to perform any transaxle repair, along with complete SRTA units, are now available through the Warehousing and Distribution Division of General Motors (GMWDD).

The SRTA program offers Cadillac dealers a unit replacement alternative to major repair of a THM440-T4 automatic transaxle. Because each SRTA transaxle is factory remanufactured to include all existing levels of product refinement and is extensively pre-tested prior to shipment, the SRTA alternative may enhance repair quality and reduce vehicle downtime.

A Hydra-Matic booklet titled "THM440-T4 Service Replacement Transmission Assembly" has been provided to your dealership by your business management division. Refer to it for specific technical information when installing the SRTA unit, and as a guide for properly processing all SRTA warranty, return, and product feedback information.

Key points for Cadillac dealers using the SRTA program include:

- A new one-day THM440-T4 update training course, #17001.16, is now available. Course material includes 440-T4 revisions affecting diagnosis and service with a workshop covering service bulletins and unit exchange procedures.

Cadillac recommends this new one-day course only be attended by those technicians who were previously trained in the three-day 440-T4 course (17001.12). To accommodate those not previously trained, the existing three-day course has been updated with information from the one-day course so that attendance on or after September 9, 1985 will credit the dealer for course 17001.16.

- A cooler flush procedure, which includes a new recommended tool J-35944, is essential when installing either a SRTA unit or when performing internal repairs to a THM440-T4. This procedure is included in the THM440-T4 SRTA booklet.

- Dealers will continue to perform on car transaxle services listed in Serviceman Bulletin T85-77.

- Shift performance conditions on model "AY" transaxles which cannot be resolved with a valve body calibration update kit (as detailed in Serviceman Bulletin T85-53) are eligible for SRTA replacement.

- Each SRTA unit is protected by a 12 month/12,000 mile Limited Warranty or the duration of the Limited New Car Warranty, whichever is greater (as detailed in section one of the Cadillac Service Policies and Procedures Manual).

- Zone Authorization is not required by Cadillac for labor operations as listed in the booklet unless the cost of repairs performed exceed the cost of the replacement unit.

- For warranty parts scrapping records, a copy of the "SRTA Failure Analysis Worksheet" is to be attached to the scrapping copy of the repair order. SRTA units are excluded from the thirty (30) day retention period required in the Cadillac Service Policies and Procedures manual. Return SRTA units weekly.

- When ordering SRTA units, obtain the Transaxle Model Code from the Transaxle ID Tag and refer to the following parts information. For more detailed parts, price and core charge information concerning SRTA units refer to GMWDD Parts Bulletin 85-154.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
