Some 1986-1987 Sedan de Villes, and Fleetwoods may experience a condition of a creaking and/or popping noise near the rear of the front door when hitting a bump or turning the vehicle. This may be caused by the center pillar hinge cover contacting the rear edge of the front door. Wear will appear in the area shown in Figure 1.
To repair this condition, use the following procedure:
1. Remove the center pillar hinge cover (six Phillips head screws).
2. Clamp cover in vise.
3. Use a body file to shave the outer edge of the cover (approximately 1/8" to 1/4").
4. Reinstall part on car.
5. With the rear door open, visually check for sufficient clearance.
6. Remove part.
7. Repaint part.
8. Reinstall part.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
