CAMPAIGN: ENGINE OIL COOLER- HOSE SEPARATION - REPLACE

MODELS: 1986 Front Wheel Drive (FWD) Fleetwood and Deville Models

T0: ALL AFFECTED DEALERS:

General Motors of Canada has determined that certain 1986 FWD Fleetwood and Deville Models might experience oil cooler hose fitting separation from the oil cooler hose. This condition will result in the loss of oil pressure possibly resulting in engine damage.

To prevent this condition from occurring, Dealers will be required to replace both upper and lower oil cooler hoses on all affected vehicles per the Vehicles Involved and Service Procedure sections of this bulletin.

VEHICLES INVOLVED:

All 1986 FWD Fleetwood and Deville Models within the following VIN ranges require this Campaign.

G4200001 through G4318344

All affected vehicles have been identified by the VIN listing provided to involved Dealers with this bulletin. Any Dealer not receiving a listing was not shipped any of the affected vehicles.

DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY:

Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward. Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new or used vehicle inventory, or it is in your Dealership for service in the future, you should take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before reselling or releasing the vehicle.

Owners of vehicles recently sold from your new vehicle inventory are to be contacted by the Dealer, and arrangements made to make the required modification according to instructions contained in this bulletin.

CAMPAIGN PROCEDURE:

Refer to Section 4 of the Service Policies and Procedures Manual for the detailed procedure on handling Product Campaigns. Dealers are requested to complete the campaign on all transfers as soon as possible.

OWNER NOTIFICATION:

All owners of record at the time of campaign release are shown on the attached computer listing and have been notified by first class mail from General Motors. The listings provided are for campaign activity only and should not be used for any other purpose.

PARTS INFORMATION:

Parts required for this modification should be ordered through regular channels as follows:

NOTE: OIL COOLER HOSES MUST BE ORDERED ACCORDING TO THE VIN RANGE INDICATED BELOW. BE CERTAIN TO CHECK THE VIN OF THE VEHICLE BEING SERVICED TO OBTAIN THE CORRECT PARTS.

PARTS AND LABOUR CLAIM INFORMATION:

Credit for the campaign work performed will be paid upon receipt of a properly completed campaign claim card or RAPID terminal transmission in accordance with the following:

Time allowance includes 0.1 hour for Dealer administrative detail associated with this campaign. Parts credit will be based on dealer net plus 30% to cover parts handling.

SERVICE PROCEDURE:

Service Procedure for VIN Range G4200001 to G4252323

1. Disconnect upper and lower oil cooler hoses at radiator and at oil filter adapter. Use back-up wrench where this is appropriate (Figure 1).

2. Loosen retaining clip-screw until cooler lines can be removed (Figure 1).

3. Position new upper and lower lines behind retainer clip and route as shown in Figure 1.

4. Start threads at all connections taking particular care to avoid cross threading.

5. Tighten all hose connections to 40 N.m (30 ft. lbs.).

6. Tighten retaining clip screw.

Service Procedure for VIN Range G4252324 to G4318344

1. Disconnect upper and lower oil cooler hoses at radiator and at oil filter adapter. Use back-up wrench where this is appropriate (Figure 2).

2. Loosen retaining clip screw until cooler lines can be removed (Figure 2).

3. Inspect replacement hoses to insure that 0-ring gaskets are in place at each connection. Missing or damaged 0-rings should be replaced with P/N 22514085. Do not reuse old 0-rings from original hose.

4. Position new upper and lower lines behind retainer clip and route as shown in Figure 2.

5. Start threads at all connections taking particular care to avoid cross threading.

6. Tighten all four hose connections to 18 N.m (13 ft. lbs.).

7. Tighten retaining clip screw.

8. Start engine and check for leaks. Leaking fittings cannot be corrected by applying more torque than specified.

NOTE: EXCESSIVE TORQUE MAY DAMAGE MATING PARTS. LINES THAT HAVE FITTING LEAKS SHOULD BE INSPECTED FOR DAMAGED O-RINGS OR FOREIGN MATERIAL ON THE O-RING SEAT. DAMAGED OR COMPRESSED O-RINGS SHOULD BE REPLACED.

INSTALLATION OF CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL

Clean surface of radiator upper mounting panel and apply a Campaign Identification Label. Make sure the correct campaign number is inserted on the label. This will indicate that the campaign has been completed.
