Manual Second - At any time, when the vehicle is driven in Forward, you can choose 2nd gear. But TCM control prevents transmission to upshift to more than 2nd gear. When the shift lever shifts from Manual Third to Manual Second, the manual valve will move, too. The following changes will occur in the hydraulic and electrical systems:
Manual Valve: The line pressure sent to the manual valve 32 circuit increases to meet the additional torque request for engine braking or the increasing engine load.
2-3 SS Valve: 2-3 SS valve is energized to allow the feed limit fluid to flow into the 2-3 signal fluid passage. 2-3 signal fluid overcomes 2-3 shift valve spring (372) tension to move 2-3 shift valve (371) to the applied position. The operation makes 23 adjusting fluid flow into 2nd coast clutch fluid circuit and open the overdrive clutch No. 1 feed circuit, the intermediate clutch and the 345 fluid circuit, and then drains out.
3-4 Shift Control Valve: 2-3 signal fluid is also sent to the 3-4 shift control valve (346) and overcomes the 1-2 signal fluid pressure to move the valve to remain the 34 shift control valve (345) in the applied position.
2nd Coast Clutch: 2nd coast clutch fluid is sent to the 2nd coast clutch piston to apply the 2nd coast clutch plate.
Important: If the vehicle is driven under the condition that TCM sends 3rd, 4th or 5th status signal, then the 2-3 shift valve is OFF. So it cannot downshift until the vehicle speed is lower than the engine calibrated value in TCM.
Overdrive Clutch Assembly: Overdrive clutch fluid is drained from the overdrive clutch piston to the release overdrive clutch plate.
#12 Ball Check Valve: Overdrive clutch feed fluid positions the #12 ball check valve against the overdrive clutch No. 2 feed passage and flows into overdrive clutch No. 1 feed circuit.
2-3 Shift Valve: The drained overdrive clutch No. 2 feed fluid flows into the intermediate clutch fluid circuit through the 2-3 shift valve.
Intermediate Clutch Assembly: Intermediate clutch fluid is drained from the intermediate clutch piston to release the intermediate clutch plate.
2-3 Shift Valve: Intermediate clutch fluid flows to the 2-3 shift valve through the valve bore #24, and drains from the valve.
Intermediate Clutch Accumulator: Intermediate clutch fluid is also drained from the intermediate clutch accumulator assembly. Accumulator fluid makes intermediate clutch accumulator piston overcome the accumulator spring tension to prepare for Intermediate Clutch apply once again.
If the TCC applies when the Manual Second is chosen, it will release during downshift. Under normal operating conditions, the TCC cannot apply again in 2nd gear.
