The tilt/telescoping steering column has a 4-range switch for steering wheel position adjustment, telescope when in and out, tilt when up and down. Steering column position may change as the following steps:
• | Press UP switch, steering column moves upward. |
• | Press DOWN Switch, steering column moves downward. |
• | Press FORWARD switch, steering column moves forward. |
• | Press REARWARD switch, steering column moves rearward. |
Manual controls the tilt/telescope switch, instrument panel module receives input signals. Press the control switch and sends signals to instrument panel module. Instrument panel module receives signals, then sends GMLAN messages to the driver position module (DPM), activates associated steering column drive motor.
Tilt/telescoping motor may run in the forward or reverse direction. For example, the tilt motor can make the steering column move up and down. When DPM receives the signal of raising up the column, DPM will supply battery positive voltage and ground to the tilt motor, and make column move upward. When DPM receives the signal of lower column, DPM will supply battery positive voltage and ground to the same motor with the opposite polarity. When the polarity of the applied voltage is reverse, motor run in the opposite direction to lower column.
DPM store the steering column position, and make steering column return to the position in memory with 2 position sensors. DPM supplys 5 volt reference and ground to the tilt motor position sensor and the telescope motor position sensor. The voltage of the sensor feedback circuit is 0.25-4.75 volts. Each sensor is installed to the appropriate motor cable assembly separately. When motor rotates cable, the sensor resistance change. DPM monitors the feedback voltage to determine the column position via a tilt telescope position sensor input circuit. After storing the input and output position, DPM will store the column position by recording the feedback voltage from each position sensor. When input or output positions are needed, the module will move the motor and the feedback voltages from each position sensor and stored in memory are equal.
Personalization of memory settings and the steering wheel position can be obtained by the tilt telescope steering column. The stored data includes input position and output position. Input position is the steering column when ignition switch is in the ON position. Output position is the steering column position when ignition switch is in the OFF position and the drivers side door is open.
Initial store settings of the DPM is completed in the assembly plant. The settings can be changed when buying or at any time, in order to suit customer preferences.
DPM stores personalization information. Radio is used to turn on or turn off the personalization features in DPM. Send GMLAN information to DPM by radio, set DPM to turn on personalization until the features are turned off with the DIC again.
Steering column control module may store 6 possible positions. 3 input positions and 3 output positions.
• | Driver 1 output position is set up by memory switch. |
• | Driver 2 output position is set up by memory switch. |
• | Default output position is full forward/up without memory position. |
• | Driver 1 input position is set up by memory switch. |
• | Driver 2 input position is set up by memory switch. |
• | The known driver in position is the engaged position by an unknown driver when turning the ignition switch. |
If open the door by remote controller, EKM can make driver open the door by using the key. DPM receives a GMLAN messages from EKM.
The energy absorbing and locking steering column includes 3 important features in addition to the steering function.
