Diagnostic Aids

The harness connector of each power window regulator contains a separate voltage circuit that is used exclusively for power window motor operation. These individual circuits are fed by the Power Window Motors Circuit Breaker located in the right rear fuse block. If the circuit opens at a point where the separate branches are all connected into one, all power windows will be inoperative. A short to ground anywhere in the circuit will open the Power Window Motors Circuit Breaker and cause all power windows to be inoperative. These circuits must not be confused with the voltage circuits that feed the individual door modules.

DEFINITION: All power windows simultaneously fail to operate.

Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle?

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Attempt to operate the power windows from both the driver door switch assembly (DDSA), and the window switches mounted at each passenger door.

Does any window operate?

Go to Symptoms - Doors

  1. Remove the Power Window Motors Circuit Breaker from the right rear fuse block.
  2. Probe the battery voltage supply terminal of the Power Window Motors Circuit Breaker with a test lamp connected to ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 4

Connect the test lamp between the 2 fuse block terminals of the Power Window Motors Circuit Breaker.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 6

Operate any one of the power window switches while observing the test lamp.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 14

Disconnect each window regulator, one at a time, while observing the test lamp.

Does the test lamp go out after any window regulator is disconnected?

Locate and repair an open or high resistance in the voltage circuit between the splice and the right rear fuse block. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?

Go to Step 15

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the suspect window regulator. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the right rear fuse block. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Locate and repair an open in the battery voltage supply circuit of the Power Window Motors Circuit Breaker. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Locate and repair a short to ground in the voltage circuit between the right rear fuse block and each window regulator. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Replace the suspect window regulator that is internally shorted to ground. Refer to Front Side Door Window Regulator Replacement for front windows and Rear Side Door Window Regulator Replacement for rear windows.

Replace the right rear fuse block assembly.

Replace the Power Window Motors Circuit Breaker.

  1. Re-initialize the window regulator assembly. Refer to Window Motor Programming - Express Function .
  2. Operate the system in order to verify the repair.
