Test Description

The number below refers to the step number on the diagnostic table.

  1. This step tests the integrity of the control circuit of the headlamp washer motor. If the fuse in the jumper wire opens when you perform this test, a short to ground may have occurred.

DEFINITION: The headlamp washers are inoperative. The windshield washers and headlamps operate normally. The CHECK WASHER FLUID message is not displayed.

Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle?

  1. Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF.
  2. Turn the headlamps ON.
  3. Depress the windshield washer switch 4 times.

Do the headlamp washers operate after the fourth press of the windshield washer switch?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. With a scan tool, enter Headlamp Washer controls by making the following selections:
  3. • Wiper/Washer Systems
    • Special Functions
    •  Instrument Panel Module (IPM)
  4. With the scan tool, command the Headlamp Washers ON.

Do the headlamp washers operate when they are commanded ON?

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. With a scan tool, observe the Headlamp Washer Switch parameter in the Wipers/Washer Systems, Instrument Panel Module Input data list.
  3. Press the windshield washed switch.

Does the Headlamp Washer Switch parameter display On?

  1. Remove the headlamp washer fluid pump relay.
  2. Connect a test lamp from the battery positive voltage circuit, the switch side of the headlamp washer relay connector to a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 6

Connect the test lamp from the battery positive voltage circuit, the coil side of the headlamp washer relay connector to a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Connect a 10-amp fused jumper wire between the battery positive voltage circuit, the switch side of the relay connector and the headlamp washer control circuit of the relay connector.

Does the headlamp washer fluid pump operate?

Go to Step 8

  1. Connect a test lamp between battery positive voltage and the headlamp washer relay control circuit of the relay connector.
  2. With the scan tool, command the Headlamp Washers ON.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Test the windshield wiper switch signal 2 circuit between the IPM and the windshield wiper/washer switch for a high resistance or an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the headlamp washer relay control circuit between the IPM and the headlamp washer fluid pump relay for the following conditions: Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

    • An open
    • A high resistance
    • A short to battery voltage

Test the headlamp washer fluid pump control circuit between the relay and the headlamp washer fluid pump for a high resistance or an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the ground circuit of the windshield washer fluid pump for a high resistance or an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Inspect for poor connections at the headlamp washer relay. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the headlamp washer fluid pump. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the IPM. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Repair the short to ground or open in the appropriate battery positive voltage circuit of the headlamp washer relay. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Replace the headlamp washer relay.

Replace the headlamp washer fluid pump. Refer to Washer Solvent Container, Headlamp and Windshield Washer Pump, and Solvent Level Switch Replacement .

Replace the IPM. Refer to Control Module References in Computer/Integrating Systems for replacement, setup, and programming.

  1. Reconnect all previous disconnected components.
  2. Operate the system in order to verify the repair.
