J 21854-01 Pivot Pin Remover

Removal Procedure

    Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in the Preface section.

  1. Disable the SIR coil. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.
  2. Remove the steering wheel from the column. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  3. Remove the steering column from the vehicle. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .
  4. Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only. Refer to Turn Signal Multifunction Switch Replacement .
  5. Remove the wire harness assembly only. Refer to Steering Column Wiring Harness Replacement .
  6. Remove the telescope drive motor assembly and cable only. Refer to Telescope Actuator Assembly Replacement .
  7. Remove the tilt drive motor assembly and cable only. Refer to Tilt Motor Replacement .

  9. Remove one TORX® head screw from the control module.
  10. Slide the control module out from the steering column.

  11. Object Number: 626495  Size: SH
  12. Remove the following components:
  13. 10.1. The boot seal (5)
    10.2. The steering shaft seal (4)
    10.3. The sensor retainer (3)
    10.4. The sensor locator (2)
  14. The steering wheel position sensor (1). Refer to Steering Wheel Position Sensor Centering .

  16. Remove one TORX® head screw from the bottom of the gearshift and tilt motor bracket.
  17. Remove the bracket.

  19. Gently pry the lower shield assembly off of the steering column.

  21. Remove 2 pivot pins (1) from the steering column support assembly using J 21854-01 .

  22. Object Number: 588876  Size: SH
  23. Unscrew the lead screw.

  24. Object Number: 626497  Size: SH
  25. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering column support assembly (2) with the steering shaft (3) still attached.

  27. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering shaft assembly (2).

  28. Object Number: 306318  Size: SH

    Important: Mark the race and upper shaft (1) and the lower steering shaft (2) to ensure proper assembly. Failure to assemble properly will cause the steering wheel to be turned 180 degrees.

  29. Tilt the upper shaft assembly 90 degrees to the steering shaft assembly and disengage.

  31. Remove two TORX® screws from the dampener.

  32. Object Number: 588877  Size: SH
  33. Remove and discard 4 support screws from the steering column support.
  34. Remove the steering column support.
  35. Inspect the steering column for accident damage.

Installation Procedure

    Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 588877  Size: SH
  1. Install the steering column support and secure the support using 4 support screws.
  2. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).

  3. Install two TORX® screws into the dampener.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 1.5 N·m (13 lb in).

    Important: Use the alignment marks from the disassemble procedure. Failure to assemble properly will cause the steering wheel to be turned 180 degrees.

  5. Apply GM P/N 12345718 (Canadian P/N 10953516) to the race and upper shaft assembly.
  6. Align the marks on the race and upper shaft assembly with the lower shaft assembly.
  7. Install the lower shaft assembly to the race and upper shaft assembly.

  9. Install the steering shaft assembly (2) into the tilt head assembly (1).

  10. Object Number: 626497  Size: SH
  11. Install the tilt head assembly (1) and the steering shaft assembly (3) into the jacket assembly (2).

  12. Object Number: 588876  Size: SH
  13. Install the lead screw.

  14. Object Number: 626498  Size: SH
  15. Lubricate the pivot pins with GM P/N 12345718 (Canadian P/N 10953516).
  16. Install the 2 pivot pins onto the steering column support assembly.

  17. Align and snap the lower shield assembly onto the steering column.

  18. Object Number: 626496  Size: SH
  19. Install the bracket.
  20. Install one TORX® head screw to the bottom of the gearshift and tilt motor bracket.
  21. Tighten
    Tighten the screw to 3 N·m (27 lb in).

  22. Install the following components:
  23. 13.1. The steering wheel position sensor (1). Refer to Steering Wheel Position Sensor Centering .
    13.2. The sensor locator (2)
    13.3. The sensor retainer (3)
    13.4. The steering shaft seal (4)
    13.5. The boot seal (5)

  24. Slide the control module into position.
  25. Install one retaining screw.
  26. Tighten
    Tighten the screw to 5 N·m (44 lb in).

    Caution: Improper routing of the wire harness assembly may damage the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil. This may result in a malfunction of the coil, which may cause personal injury.

  27. Install the tilt drive motor assembly and cable only. Refer to Tilt Motor Replacement .
  28. Install the telescope drive motor assembly and cable only. Refer to Telescope Actuator Assembly Replacement .
  29. Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only. Refer to Turn Signal Multifunction Switch Replacement .
  30. Install the wire harness assembly only. Refer to Steering Column Wiring Harness Replacement .
  31. Install the steering column into the vehicle. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .
  32. Install the steering wheel onto the steering column. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  33. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.
