This bulletin is being revised to provide warranty claim information. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 04-06-03-014 (Section 06 -- Engine/Propulsion System).
This bulletin is being issued to inform dealers that some of the above vehicles may have batteries that were produced with lower than specified specific gravity in some of the cells. If a vehicle comes in for service for a no start/no crank condition due to a discharged battery, follow published diagnostics to determine the underlying cause of the battery run down. The battery date code should also be inspected. If the date code is within the identified build date range, then the battery should be replaced to eliminate a possible repeat occurrence.
Important: The Midtronic battery tester may not adequately identify a suspect or faulty battery with this condition.
Suspect batteries are identified as catalog number 3058, AC Delco P/N 101-6YR, GM P/N 88901964 built from 1/15/04 through 5/27/04 with matching date codes of 4AN15 through 4EN27. Date codes (1) are marked or etched on the upper case surface near the negative (-) terminal symbol.
Battery date codes are 5 characters. The first is 4 for 2004. The second character will be letter A for January through E for June. The third character will be N for New Brunswick and the last two characters will reflect the day.
The out-of-vehicle Midtronics code generated by the J 42000 or J 42000EU battery tester is required for claim processing on labor operation N0110, Battery -- Replace. The code must be entered into the Failure Code (FC) field on the warranty claim. Also, in the comments field add "Battery replaced per Corporate Bulletin Number 04-06-03-014A."
