Subject:Steering Column Will Not Telescope

Models:2005 Cadillac STS

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in the PI.

Condition/Concern:

Some customers may comment that the telescoping steering column is inoperative. This may occur after the Driver Position Module (DPM) has been replaced or the Steering Column soft stops have been cleared. The condition may be caused by a bind between the steering column telescoping lead screw and the Jackscrew Right Hand Telescoping Nut (shown as items 52 and 54 on SI Document ID # 589716).

If the telescoping steering column soft stops are learned while the column is in the bound condition, the DPM will learn the bound position for its soft stops and will not travel beyond this position even if the column becomes unbound.

Recommendation/Instructions:

  1. Clear the steering column soft stops using the Tech 2.
  2. 1.1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
1.2. Select Body and Accessories with a scan tool.
    1.3. Select Seats.
    1.4. Select Special Functions.
    1.5. Select DPM.
    1.6. Select Clear Soft Stops.
1.7. Select the ON soft key.
  3. Loosen the 2 Jackscrew Nut Pan Head Tapping Screws (SI Document ID # 589716 item 55) one full turn each.
  4. Operate the steering column. If the bind condition was preventing column operation, the column should now move.
  5. Center the steering column.
  6. Re-torque the 2 Jackscrew Nut Pan Head Tapping Screws (SI Document ID # 589716 item 55).
  7. Set the soft stops.
  8. 6.1. Telescope the column all the way forward and hold for 1-2 seconds.
6.2. Telescope the column all the way rearward and hold for 1-2 seconds.
6.3. Tilt the column all the way down and hold for 1-2 seconds.
6.4. Tilt the column all the way up and hold for 1-2 seconds.

Notice: The Tilt and Telescope soft stop learned status can be read using the Tech 2.
