This bulletin is being updated to include additional diagnostic information. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 05-06-04-015 (Section 06 -- Engine).

Condition

Some customers may comment that the engine is hard to start cold, no start cold, runs rough cold, won't continue to run cold, or is hard to restart cold.

Cause

Engineering has identified a concern with the ECM software.

Ensure Following Conditions are Met Before Programming ECM

    • There are no charging system concerns.
    • Battery voltage is between 12-16 volts. If a battery charger is needed, less than 5 amp charge when programming ECM. It is very likely that a DTC P2119 will set after a reflash if the system voltage is low.
    • Turn off or disable any system that may put a load on the vehicle battery.
    • Ambient and coolant temperature during reflash should be above 5°C (41°F). If the temperature is below 5°C (41°F), the vehicle will go into "reduced power" on startup due to insufficient throttle learn.
    • If the VIN is not properly entered into the ECM, a DTC P0315 will continue to set until the ECM VIN matches the BCM.
    • Anytime an ECM, crank sensor , crankshaft and/or engine is replaced, a CKP System Variation Learn Procedure must be performed.
    • After performing a CKP System Variation Learn Procedure, the ECM must do a proper power down to store the CKP System Variation Learn Procedure values or a DTC P0315 will continue to set until values are stored.
    • The ignition switch must be in the proper position. The Tech 2® prompts you to turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. DO NOT change the position of the ignition switch during the programming procedure, unless instructed to do so.

Correction

Important: If routine diagnosis does not identify the cause of the above condition, then program the ECM. Refer to and print a copy of the Service Programming System (SPS) using the appropriate Service Information (SI) procedures to assist in programming the ECM.

Reprogram the ECM with the latest calibrations. Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) using the appropriate Service Information (SI) procedures. The new calibrations were released beginning with TIS satellite data update version 2 which was broadcast to dealers on 02/05/05. For the dealers that use CDs, they were mailed on 02/11/05. As always, make sure your TECH 2® is updated with the latest software version.
