Subject:Clunk Noise From Steering

Models:2004 - 2007 Cadillac SRX
2005 - 2007 Cadillac STS

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Clunk noise from the steering system while turning.

Recommendation/Instructions:

Steering Gear clunk:

  1. Turn vehicle on (preferably warmed-up).
  2. Keep in park or drive at slow "parking lot" speeds.
  3. Turn steering wheel to the left 90 degrees.
  4. Turn steering wheel to the right 180 degrees.
  5. If pop/clunk is heard (probably felt in floor pan as well) upon changing directions from left-to-right (or right-to-left), then the gear assembly should be replaced.

Note: The driver won't necessarily need to turn a full 90 or 180 degrees, nor should it be important whether you turn right or left first. The main idea is that you want to turn the wheel enough in one direction to apply significant pressure to the piston internal to the gear assembly, and then load the system in the other direction (by turning the wheel the other way). The gear pop/clunk should not occur again until the driver turns the wheel again in the opposite direction.

Intermediate Shaft clunk:

  1. Turn vehicle on (preferably warmed-up).
  2. Keep in park.
  3. Turn wheel (from the straight-ahead position) in either direction to steering gear assembly end stop.
  4. Turn wheel in opposite direction to other steering gear assembly end stop.
  5. If a clunk occurs multiple times (somewhat cyclically) as the steering wheel is steered from "straight-ahead" to the end stops, then the upper intermediate shaft should be replaced.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
