Some customers may comment that the rear axle seal is leaking fluid. This condition also applies to the front axle seal on vehicles equipped with All-Wheel Drive.
Confirm the condition following the Rear/Front Axle Lubricant Leak Diagnosis in SI.
A new pinion seal is now available from GMSPO for service on the vehicles referenced above. It is similar in design to the new pinion seal used in production beginning with vehicles produced for the 2008 model year. It is not interchangeable due to some slight dimensional differences.
Replace the pinion seal with the new design seal, which is included in the pinion seal kits listed below with their applications. The kits include a new pinion yoke and pinion nut, which should be used when replacing the seal, using the procedures in SI.
When replacing the pinion seal, make sure that the pinion bore is free of excess fluid that could get trapped before the yoke is installed. Install the new seal and yoke promptly, before excess fluid seeps into the area. It may be necessary to drain some or all of the axle fluid to assure that the pinion bore remains free of fluid during seal installation. This should prevent the lube from being trapped behind the dust shield.
Note: If a vehicle has had a service axle installed that uses the new 2008 model design, it cannot use the pinion seal kits listed below because of dimensional differences.
A service axle that uses the 2008 production style seal can be identified by a casting number visible on the pinion cartridge casting immediately behind the yoke. On a rear axle, the new design casting number is 6457038590. On a front axle, the casting number is 6507022390. See the pictures below.
If the vehicle has had a replacement axle that has a pinion cartridge with one of these numbers, the pinion seal leak should be repaired using the current production pinion seal (GM P/ N 25861283 for a rear axle, or GM P/ N 19132939 for a front axle).
Note: If the vehicle does not have front or rear drive module with a pinion cartridge as described above, it has the seal design used in 2007 and earlier model years, and should be repaired using the parts information below.
