The inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) compares the restraint ID that is stored in the SDM to the restraint ID that is stored in the instrument panel module (IPM). The restraints ID that is being compared to contains the last 4 digits of SDM part number. When the ignition is turned ON, the SDM compares this information to the information stored in the IPM over the GMLAN communication circuit. If there is a mismatch between the information stored in the SDM and IPM, DTC B1001 will set.
This diagnostic procedure supports the following DTC:
DTC B1001 SDM Option Configuration Error
This vehicle has DTCs which include DTC symptoms. For more information on DTC symptoms, refer to DTC Symptom Description in Vehicle DTC Information.
DTC Symptom | DTC Symptom Descriptor |
---|---|
00 | Option Configuration Error |
Ignition 1 voltage is within the normal operating voltage range.
• | The last 4 digits of the SDM part number does not match the last 4 digits stored in the IPM. |
• | The VIN stored in the IPM does not match that of the vehicle. |
• | The SDM commands ON the AIR BAG warning lamp via GMLAN serial data. |
• | The SDM disables all deployments. |
The restraints ID that is stored in the SDM matches the restraints ID that is stored in the IPM.
This DTC is an indication that an incorrect SDM is installed in the vehicle, or that the SDM and/or the IPM was replaced without reprogramming the IPM with the new information.
The following numbers refer to the step numbers in the diagnostic table:
This test checks to see if the correct VIN is programmed in the IPM.
This step explains that the IPM must be programmed.
This test checks to see if after clearing the DTCs, if this DTC is current then its possible that the wrong SDM has been installed.

Important: J-45289 CANdi module must be used with the scan tool. Does the scan tool indicate that DTC B1001 is current? | Go to Step 3 | Go to Step 8 |
With the scan tool, verify that the instrument panel module (IPM) is programmed with the correct VIN that is stored in the IPM to the VIN plate of the vehicle. Is the IPM programmed with the correct VIN? | Go to Step 5 | Go to Step 4 | |
Use the scan tool to program the correct VIN into the IPM. Refer to Control Module References in Computer/Integrating Systems for replacement, setup, and programming. Did you complete the reprogramming procedure? | Go to Step 5 | -- | |
5 | Using the scan tool, perform the Setup SDM Part Number into IPM, Refer to Control Module References in Computer/Integrating Systems for replacement, setup, and programming. Did you complete the reprogramming procedure? | Go to Step 6 | -- |
Does the scan tool indicate that this DTC is current? | Go to Step 7 | Go to Step 8 | |
