Removal Procedure

    Important: 

       • There is no service interval for fuel filter replacement. Only replace the fuel filter if the filter is restricted.
       • If you find a restricted fuel filter, inspect and clean the inside of the fuel tank.

  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief .
  2. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  3. Place an approved container under the vehicle to catch the draining gasoline.
  4. Disconnect the quick-connect fittings (4 and 5) at the fuel filter inlet. Refer to Metal Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service .
  5. Disconnect the quick-connect fitting (1) at the fuel filter outlet.
  6. Drain any remaining fuel into an approved gasoline container.
  7. Remove the fuel filter (3) by sliding it out of the bracket (2).
  8. Remove the bolt (9) and bracket (2) if necessary.
  9. Discard the fuel filter into an approved container.

Installation Procedure

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  1. Install the bracket (2) and bolt (9) if previously removed.
  2. Tighten
    Tighten the fuel filter bracket mounting bolt to 9 N·m (80 lb in).

  3. Remove the protective caps from the new fuel filter.
  4. If originally equipped, install new plastic connector retainers on the fuel filter ports. Install the new retainers in the same position as on the old fuel filter.
  5. Slide the fuel filter into place.
  6. Connect the quick-connect fitting (1) to the outlet side of the filter.
  7. Connect the quick-connect fittings (4 and 5) to the inlet side of the filter. Refer to Metal Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service .
  8. Lower the vehicle.
  9. Ensure that the fuel tank filler cap is installed correctly.
  10. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  11. Perform the following procedure in order to inspect for leaks:
  12. 10.1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF for 2 seconds.
    10.2. Turn OFF the ignition for 10 seconds.
    10.3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
    10.4. Inspect for fuel leaks.
  13. Install the engine sight shield Refer to Intake Manifold Sight Shield Replacement .
