Circuit/System Description

The exterior door handle switch signal circuit provides inputs to the remote control door lock receiver (RCDLR) and the driver or passenger door module (DDM/PDM) when the exterior door handle switch is activated. This input allows the DDM/PDM and RCDLR to detect a door open request. The DDM/PDM and RCDLR provide voltage to the exterior door handle switch via the front door handle switch signal circuit. When the front door handle is activated, the switch closes and the voltage signals from the DDM/PDM and RCDLR are pulled to ground.

Conditions for Running the DTC

The system voltage is 9-16 volts.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The RCDLR or DDM/PDM detects the front exterior door handle switch signal circuit is closed for greater than 180 seconds.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

The RCDLR or DDM/PDM ignores inputs from the exterior door handle switch until the switch changes state.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

    • The DTC will be current for as long as the fault is present.
    • When the fault is no longer present, the DTC will be a history DTC.
    • A history DTC will clear after 50 ignition cycles.

Circuit/System Verification

  1. Ignition ON, observe the scan tool Driver Door Module Driver Door Handle parameter and the scan tool Remote Control Door Lock Receiver Ext Driver Door Handle Switch parameter while using the exterior driver door handle. The parameter should change between Inactive and Active.
  2. Observe the scan tool Passenger Door Module Driver Door Handle parameter and the scan tool Remote Control Door Lock Receiver Ext Psgr Door Handle Switch parameter while using the exterior passenger door handle. The parameter should change between Inactive and Active.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate exterior door handle switch assembly and the X1 harness connector at the RCDLR.
  2. Ignition ON, verify the scan tool Door Handle parameter is Inactive.
  3. If not the specified value, test the signal circuit terminal E for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the door control module.
  4. Install a 3A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal E and ground. Verify the scan tool Door Handle parameter is Active.
  5. If not the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the door control module.
  6. Ignition OFF, connect the X1 harness connector at the RCDLR and and disconnect the X2 harness connector at the door module.
  7. Verify the scan tool Remote Control Door Lock Receiver Ext. Door Handle Switch parameter is Inactive.
  8. If not the specified value, test the signal circuit terminal E for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the RCDLR.
  9. Install a 3A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal E and ground. Verify the scan tool Ext. Door Handle Switch parameter is Active.
  10. If not the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the RCDLR.
  11. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the exterior door handle switch assembly.

Component Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect harness connector at the appropriate exterior door handle.
  2. Test for infinite resistance between the signal terminal and the ground terminal listed below with the door handle switch in the open position.
  3. • Signal terminal E and ground terminal F
    • Signal terminal D and ground terminal C
If not the specified value, replace exterior door handle.
  4. Test for less than 2 ohms between the signal terminal and the ground terminal listed below with the door handle switch in the closed position.
  5. • Signal terminal E and ground terminal F
    • Signal terminal D and ground terminal C
If greater than the specified range, replace exterior door handle.

Repair Instructions

Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification after completing the diagnostic procedure.
