Steering Column Anti-Rotation Pin
Removal Procedure
Notice: The front wheels of the vehicle must be maintained in the straight ahead
position and the steering column must be in the LOCK position before disconnecting
the steering column or intermediate shaft. Failure to follow these procedures
will cause improper alignment of some components during installation and result
in damage to the SIR coil assembly.
- Turn the steering wheel so that the front wheels are pointing straight ahead.
- Install the
J 42640
through the access hole in the lower steering column trim cover in order to lock the steering column.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
- Remove the upper to center intermediate shaft retaining bolt.
- Remove the lower intermediate shaft to the power steering gear retaining bolt.
- Disconnect the lower intermediate shaft from the power steering gear.
Important: Note the relationship of the center intermediate shaft to upper intermediate shaft in order to ensure proper installation.
- Disconnect the center intermediate shaft from the upper intermediate shaft
- Remove the center intermediate shaft with the lower intermediate shaft attached.
- Remove the lower to center intermediate shaft retaining bolt.
Important: Note the relationship of the center intermediate shaft to lower intermediate shaft in order to ensure proper installation.
- Remove the center intermediate shaft from the lower intermediate shaft.
Installation Procedure
- Install the lower intermediate shaft to the upper intermediate shaft.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
- Install the lower to center intermediate shaft retaining bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 30 N·m (23 lb ft).
Important: Ensure the orientation of the intermediate shafts as noted during removal.
- Connect the center intermediate shaft to the upper intermediate shaft.

Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement - Center with JL7
Removal Procedure
- Turn the steering wheel so that the front wheels are pointing straight ahead.
- Turn the ignition on with the engine off.
Important: After the steering column is removed, the upper intermediate steering shaft must be taped to the upper intermediate steering shaft actuator boot. Any separate movement must be inhibited.
- Remove the steering column. Refer to
Steering Column Replacement.
- Remove the lower intermediate steering shaft bolt (2).
- Separate the lower intermediate steering shaft (1) from the steering gear.
- Remove the lower, intermediate, and upper steering shafts as an assembly through the passenger compartment.
- Remove the intermediate steering shaft bolt (1).
Important: Ensure the tape is still holding the upper intermediate steering shaft before separating the lower and center intermediate steering shafts.
Important: Corrosion can cause difficulty in separating the steering shafts from each other. Do not strike the shafts at any point. Use the appropriate lubricant, rust release, or equivalent only to help loosen the shafts for separation.
- Separate the lower intermediate steering shaft (2) from the center intermediate steering shaft.
- Remove the intermediate steering shaft bolt (3).
- Separate the center intermediate steering shaft (4) from the upper intermediate steering shaft.
Installation Procedure
- Connect the center intermediate steering shaft (4) to the upper intermediate steering shaft.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
- Install the intermediate steering shaft bolt (3).
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).
- Connect the lower intermediate steering shaft (2) to the center intermediate steering shaft.
- Install the intermediate steering shaft bolt (1).
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).
Important: Vehicles with JL7 have an intermediate steering shaft seal that contains a double lip design. It must be installed correctly or unwanted noise and resistance in the steering could occur. After positioning the steering
shafts in place inspect the passenger compartment side for proper installation. The lip of the seal should be visible completely around the entire circumference with no wrinkles or folds.
- Install the lower, intermediate, and upper steering shafts as an assembly through the passenger compartment.
