Front Brake Hose Replacement JE5, JL9

Caution: Refer to Brake Fluid Irritant Caution in the Preface section.

Notice: Refer to Brake Fluid Effects on Paint and Electrical Components Notice in the Preface section.

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
  3. Clean all dirt and foreign material from the brake hose and the brake pipe fittings.
  4. Remove the wheel speed sensor wiring harness retainers from the brake hose bracket.

  5. Object Number: 899222  Size: SH
  6. Remove the front brake hose bracket bolts (1).

  7. Object Number: 753084  Size: SH
  8. Disconnect the brake pipe fitting (1) from the brake hose (3).
  9. Cap the brake pipe fitting to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.

  10. Using a flat-bladed tool, remove the brake hose retainer (2) from the brake hose.

  11. Object Number: 752733  Size: SH
  12. Remove the brake hose (1) from the brake hose bracket (2).

  13. Object Number: 752743  Size: SH
  14. Remove the brake hose fitting bolt (4) from the brake caliper (1).
  15. Remove the brake hose (2) from the brake caliper.
  16. Plug the brake caliper inlet port to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.

  17. Place a shop towel on a hard surface.
  18. Tap the threaded end of the brake hose fitting bolt on the shop towel to remove the gaskets (3) from the bolt.
  19. Remove and discard the two copper brake hose gaskets. These gaskets may be stuck to the brake caliper and/or the brake hose end.

Installation Procedure

    Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 899222  Size: SH
  1. Install the front brake hose bracket bolts (1).
  2. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 14 N·m (124 lb in).

  3. Remove the plug from the brake caliper inlet port.

  4. Object Number: 752743  Size: SH

    Important: Install NEW copper brake hose gaskets.

  5. Assemble the brake hose (2), the NEW copper brake hose gaskets (3), and the brake hose fitting bolt (4) to the brake hose).
  6. Install the brake hose fitting bolt to the brake caliper (1).
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  8. Install the brake hose (1) to the brake hose bracket (2).
  9. Important: The tapered end of the hose retainer must be installed toward the brake pipe.


    Object Number: 753084  Size: SH
  10. Install the brake hose retainer (2) to the brake hose (3).
  11. Remove the cap from the brake pipe fitting.
  12. Install the brake pipe fitting (1) to the brake hose.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the fitting to 18 N·m (13 lb ft).

  14. Install the wheel speed sensor wiring harness retainers to the brake hose bracket.
  15. Bleed the hydraulic brake system. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding.
  16. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
  17. Lower the vehicle.

Removal Procedure

  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
  3. Clean all dirt and foreign material from the brake hose and the brake pipe fittings.
  4. Remove the wheel speed sensor wiring harness retainers from the brake hose bracket.

  6. Remove the front brake hose bracket bolts (1).

  8. Disconnect the brake pipe fitting (1) from the brake hose (3).
  9. Cap the brake pipe fitting to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.

  10. Using a flat-bladed tool, remove the brake hose retainer (2) from the brake hose.

  12. Remove the brake hose (1) from the brake hose bracket (2).

  13. Object Number: 752743  Size: SH
  14. Remove the brake hose fitting bolt (4) from the brake caliper (1).
  15. Remove the brake hose (2) from the brake caliper.
  16. Plug the brake caliper inlet port to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.

  17. Place a shop towel on a hard surface.
  18. Tap the threaded end of the brake hose fitting bolt on the shop towel to remove the gaskets (3) from the bolt.
  19. Remove and discard the two copper brake hose gaskets. These gaskets may be stuck to the brake caliper and/or the brake hose end.

  1. Install the front brake hose bracket bolts (1).
  2. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 14 N·m (124 lb in).

  5. Assemble the brake hose (2), the NEW copper brake hose gaskets (3), and the brake hose fitting bolt (4) to the brake hose).
  6. Install the brake hose fitting bolt to the brake caliper (1).
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 34 N·m (25 lb ft).

  8. Install the brake hose (1) to the brake hose bracket (2).
  9. Important: The tapered end of the hose retainer must be installed toward the brake pipe.


    Object Number: 753084  Size: SH
  10. Install the brake hose retainer (2) to the brake hose (3).
  11. Remove the cap from the brake pipe fitting.
  12. Install the brake pipe fitting (1) to the brake hose.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the fitting to 18 N·m (13 lb ft).

  14. Install the wheel speed sensor wiring harness retainers to the brake hose bracket.
  15. Bleed the hydraulic brake system. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding.
  16. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
  17. Lower the vehicle.
