Audio System Description

The Navigation radio operates similar to a traditional radio. For information on the audio description and operation, see Radio/Audio System Description and Operation

Navigation System Components

The navigation system contains the following components:

    • Navigation radio
    • Global positioning system (GPS) antenna)
    •  Auxiliary RCA video jacks (If Equipped)

Navigation System Components -- YQ6 or YQ7

The export navigation system (w/YQ6, YQ7) contains the following additional components:

    • The vehicle information communication system (VICS) microprocessor card (w/YQ7)
    • The VICS optical/microwave beacon antenna (w/YQ7)
    • The 4 TV antennae integrated into the rear window glass (w/YQ6, YQ7)
    • The VICS FM antenna integrated into the rear glass (w/YQ7)
    • The TV antenna module to control antenna selection (w/YQ6, YQ7)
    • The 2 TV antenna amplifiers (w/YQ6, YQ7)
    • The auxiliary RCA video jacks (If Equipped)

Navigation Radio

This component acts as the operator interface for the navigation system, provides the data input from the operator to the navigation system and provides navigation information to the operator via the display screen. The navigation radio is located in the center of the instrument panel. The navigation radio provides the following:

    • A display screen--All navigation, audio and TV functions are displayed on this screen.
    • Soft key buttons on the display to allow selection from menus and to operate the navigation system and the audio system.
    • The DVD provides map data for navigation and map route guidance.
    • The navigation system map with routing information displayed on the navigation radio screen.
    • Provides verbal guidance to the operator.
    • Connection to the global positioning system (GPS) antenna, which provides the vehicle position information.

Global Positioning System (GPS) Antenna

The global positioning system (GPS) antenna is located in the upper center of the I/P. The GPS antenna is powered through the same coaxial cable used to send the signals to the NAV radio. Interference to the system may occur if any of the following exist:

    • Signals are obstructed by objects such as, tall buildings or trees.
    • Metallic objects located on the dashboard.
    • Aftermarket glass tinting has been applied to the vehicles windshield.

Route Guidance

The map will display the route to the selected destination. Voice prompts alert the operator of upcoming events (turns) and arrivals at the destination. The navigation system will automatically recalculate if the route is not followed. The navigation radio uses data received from the global positioning system (GPS) satellites as well as the vehicle speed signal to accurately display the current position of the vehicle. The map DVD must be in the NAV radio for route guidance.

Auxiliary RCA Video Jacks (If Equipped)

The radio system may have auxiliary input jacks located in the center console. An external audio/video device such as a camera, laptop computer, video game console, etc. can be connected to the auxiliary input jacks for use as another source for audio listening and video source on the Navigation screen while in Park. This is not an audio or video output; do not plug a television into the auxiliary RCA jacks.

Voice Recognition

The Navigation System's voice recognition allows for hands-free operation of navigation and audio system features. The voice recognition can be used when the ignition is in accessory or ON, or when retained accessory power (RAP) is active. This feature only works if the map DVD is inserted and the AGREE button has been pressed. For a complete list of available commands, refer to the Owners Manual Navigation Supplement and/or Personalization in the Owners manual.

Points of Interest

Points of interests (POI) are locations that are frequently visited. Points of interest can be can be displayed on the map or set as a destination. The following are some of the available POI:

    • Gas Station
    • Restaurant
    • College
    • Police Station

Bluetooth (If Equipped)

The navigation radio may be equipped with Bluetooth. Bluetooth is a wireless communication system that allows the use of a cellular phone in a hands-free mode. A phone directory may also be set up for use in the vehicle. Up to 12 phones may be registered with this Bluetooth system, but only one phone may be connected at a time. In order to use a cellular phone with this Bluetooth system, the phone must be Bluetooth compatible. Please see the phone information to find out which versions of Bluetooth work with your phone.

To set up your phone, do the following:

  1. Press the AUX hard key to enter the Bluetooth screen.
  2. Touch the Bluetooth screen button.
  3. Touch the Search screen button. The system will search for all Bluetooth compatible phones in a designated area.
  4. The Device List screen will appear. Scroll through the choices using the arrow buttons.
  5. Choose your device by touching the icon next to the device name.
  6. Touch the Connect screen button. Your phone and the Bluetooth system will begin a pairing procedure.
  7. Follow the instructions on screen. They will differ depending on your phone. Refer to your phone instructions for further information.

Refer to the owners manual for more information.

Speed Alert

Note: No messages being sent on the serial data circuit can be the result of no speed data on the map disc for the road the vehicle is on, a fault with the radio/navigation unit, or a GPS fault. The IPC does not know the difference. Sometimes the navigation system may indicate the vehicle is on the highway (speed limit: 65 MPH), when it is actually on the service road next to the highway (speed limit: 30 MPH). In these situations the IPC will display the highway speed limit. This is not a fault of the IPC, it is receiving the message from the radio/navigation unit. This should be considered as normal operation and the navigation radio or the map disc should not be replaced.

Speed Alert is a feature that notifies the driver of what the legal speed limit is for the street the vehicle is currently driving on. This feature also has the ability to alert the driver of when the speed limit has been exceeded. The driver can scroll through the DIC, in the IPC, to display "Speed Limit: XX MPH" (or "Km/h" for metric setting). This is the legal speed limit. If the vehicle speed exceeds that of the legal limit, a warning of "Speed Limit: XX MPH" will appear on the DIC. The driver can select 4 options relating to speed alert:

  1. Speed Alert: Off
  2. Speed Alert: At Limit (no offset)
  3. Speed Alert: +5 MPH (Km/h)
  4. Speed Alert: +10 MPH (Km/h)

Selections 3 and 4 are an offset for the warning message. Meaning, the warning message will not appear until the vehicle speed has exceeded the legal limit by 5 or 10 mph/kph. If selection 1 is chosen (speed alert: off) then no warning message will be displayed, but the driver can still scroll DIC menu to see what the speed limit is.

Speed Advisory

Speed Advisory is similar to speed alert but this notifies the driver of what the "advised" speed is. This would be applicable on roads such as highway exit ramps, where there are recommended speeds for the ramp. The driver can scroll through the DIC, in the IPC, to display "Advisory: XX MPH" (or "Km/h" for metric setting). The notification to the driver will be based on the offset for Speed Alert (at limit, +5 MPH, +10 MPH). Speed Advisory messages have a higher priority than Speed Alert messages. Speed Advisory notification can be turn off through the DIC.

TV and VICS Antenna (If Equipped)

These several antennae are conductive traces placed on the inside of the rear window glass.

TV Antenna Module (If Equipped)

The TV antenna module is used by the navigation radio to automatically select the antenna combination that provides the strongest TV signal to the navigation radio. The TV antenna module also provides the vehicle information communication system (VICS) FM signal to the VICS card (export, w/UE9).

TV Antenna Amplifiers (If Equipped)

The TV antenna amplifiers are powered by the TV antenna module through the same coaxial cable used to carry their signals to the TV antenna module. They are attached to 2 of the 4 TV antenna trace patterns in the rear window glass.

VICS Optical/Microwave Beacon Antenna (If Equipped)

The vehicle information communication system (VICS) optical/microwave beacon antenna (export, w/UE9) is a dealer-installed option. The antenna, which is mounted on the right side of the instrument panel, picks up signals through the front window glass. A coaxial cable carries the power to and signals from this antenna to the navigation radio.
