ENG OIL LEAK / OIL FILTER SEAL NEW SEAL RELEASED FOR SERVICE

ENGINE OIL LEAK - 4.1L V-6 OIL FILTER ADAPTER SEAL

A new design oil filter adapter seal (P/N 1627423) has been released for servicing 1980-1982 4.1L V-6 engines. This new design seal will correct engine oil leaks originating between the oil pump cover and adapter plate.

The following service procedure should be closely followed when installing this new seal.

Removal (Old Seal)

1. Remove oil filter. 2. Remove 3 (13mm) nuts retaining filter adapter to plate (refer to illustration). 3. Remove adapter and discard gasket between adapter and plate. 4. Remove large nut (24mm) and plate. 5. Remove and discard old seal between plate and oil pump cover.

Installation (New Seal)

1. Thoroughly clean and inspect adapter plate.

The adapter plate must be flat and its sealing surfaces must be free from nicks and burrs.

2. Position new seal to adapter plate as shown in illustration, view A.

This new design seal must be installed dry (without oil) and can only be installed one way.

3. Install plate on pump cover face with two external tangs straddling regulator spring nut.

4. Install 24mm nut and torque to 20 N.m (15 ft. lbs.).

Do not overtorque nut. Excessive torque will distort plate and may cause an oil leak.

5. Install new adapter gasket on adapter.

A small quantity of grease may be used to retain the gasket to the adapter for ease of installation. The gasket must be retained within the recessed area of the adapter and positioned so there are no restrictions in the oil passages.

6. Install adapter and gasket onto plate.

7. Install and evenly snug 3 (13mm) prevailing torque nuts. Alternately torque to 16 N.m (12 f t. lbs.).

8. Install oil filter.

9. Check engine oil level and add as required.

10. Start engine and run for at least 15 minutes. Check for oil leaks at filter, adapter and plate.

11. Recheck engine oil level and add as required.

For warranty purposes, use Operation Number J0960 at .8 hour.
