SPEEDOMETER SHAFT INTERMITTENT OPERATION

SOME 1981 "E" AND "K" SERIES VEHICLES MAY EXPERIENCE INTERMITTENT SPEEDOMETER OPERATION NOISE AND/OR FLUCTUATION WHEN THE VEHICLE IS BEING OPERATED. THIS CAN BE CAUSED BY THE SPEEDOMETER CABLE ENGAGEMENT SHAFT BEING TOO SHORT AT THE SPEEDOMETER CLUSTER. THIS CONDITION CAN BE CORRECTED BY REPLACING THE SPEEDOMETER CABLE WITH P/N 25032610 AVAILABLE FROM GMWDD. THIS NEW CABLE FEATURES A LENGTHENED ENGAGEMENT SHAFT TO INSURE A MORE POSITIVE CONNECTION TO THE SPEEDOMETER CLUSTER. USE THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE TO REPLACE SPEEDOMETER CABLE SHAFT: 1.REMOVE SPEEDOMETER CLUSTER ASSEMBLY. 2.WITH NEEDLE NOSE PLIERS, REMOVE THE SPEEDOMETER CABLE FROM THE CASING. DO NOT DISCONNECT SPEEDOMETER CABLE CASING FROM EITHER THE TRANSMISSION OR INSTRUMENT PANEL. 3.LUBE THE NEW SPEEDOMETER CABLE SHAFT WITH AC ST700 LUBRICANT. 4.FEED THE NEW SPEEDOMETER CABLE SHAFT INTO THE ORIGINAL CASING. WHEN THE CABLE TIP ENTERS THE 90F BEND NEAR THE TRANSMISSION, A SLIGHT RESISTANCE MAY BE ENCOUNTERED. ROTATE THE CABLE WHILE APPLYING PRESSURE TO PASS THE CABLE THROUGH THE BEND. WHEN THE CABLE TIP REACHES THE TRANSMISSION DRIVEN GEAR, SLIGHTLY ROTATE AGAIN TO ENSURE CORRECT ENGAGEMENT. 5.INSPECT THE SPEED SENSOR WIRING ROUTING TO INSURE IT DOES NOT INTERFERE WITH PROPER "NESTING" OF THE CLUSTER IN THE IP SINCE THIS WILL AFFECT SPEEDOMETER AND SPEEDOMETER CABLE ENGAGEMENT. CORRECT ROUTING IS SHOWN IN FIGURE 1 THROUGH ADAPTER ASSEMBLY AND FIGURE 2 THROUGH INSTRUMENT PANEL. 6.REINSTALL THE CLUSTER ASSEMBLY. 7.TEST DRIVE TO INSURE THAT SPEEDOMETER FUNCTIONS PROPERLY. FOR WARRANTY PURPOSES, USE OPERATION NO. N4399 AT .6 HOUR.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
