CATALYTIC CONVERTER - 1981 DFI VEHICLES
Some 1981 Cadillacs equipped with DFI and a first generation ECM may experience an exhaust noise resulting from a hole in the catalytic converter. This condition may result from air management valve operation which is not optimum under certain driving conditions for some vehicles.
To diagnose and correct the above condition, the following steps should be used:
1. Assure the AIR management system is working properly (refer to the 1981 Cadillac Service Manual, Section 6E).
2. If no AIR management system malfunctions are detected, install the PROM Service kit listed below: ECM ECM PROM Service Model B.C. Range Generation ID Kit Number ----- ---------- ---------- -- ------------ C-Calif 100001-139534 1 LW 1225772 C-Federal 100001-130880 1 FS 1225772 E/K-Calif E 600001-617927 1 KB 1225773 K 680001-691350 E/K-Federal E 600001-616866 1 BH 1225866 K 680001-690461
3. Replace the catalytic converter.
For warranty purposes, use Operation No. T6054 at 0.9 hour.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
