PLEASE NOTE THESE TIME ALLOWANCE INCREASES IN YOUR 1980 LABOR TIME GUIDE. THE 1980 LABOR TIME GUIDE MICROFICHE PUBLICATION WILL BE UP- DATED TO INCLUDE THESE CHANGES AND WILL BE MAILED OUT WITH THE OTHER UPDATED MICROFICHE MATERIAL (BULLETINS, ETC.) THIS FALL.

GR. 1 A/C RELAY LOCATION AND IDENTIFICATION, CIMARRON

DUE TO ASSEMBLY VARIATIONS, THE AIR CONDITIONING RELAYS (TIMER DELAY, TIMER DELAY INHIBIT, ANTI-DIESEL AND WIDE-OPEN THROTTLE) MAY NOT ALWAYS BE ORIENTED AS SHOWN IN THE 1982 CIMARRON SERVICE MANUAL, PAGE 1B-10 AND 8A-82.

TO ASSURE CORRECT DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE, IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THESE RELAY BE CORRECTLY IDENTIFIED. TO ASSIST IN CORRECT IDENTIFICATION, THE RELAYS ARE STAMPED WITH A SPECIFIC PART NUMBER AND ARE CONNECTED TO A SPECIFIC COLOR CONNECTOR AS FOLLOWS:

RELAY PART NUMBER CONNECTOR COLOR

TIMER DELAY 14036278 RED TIMER DELAY INHIBITER 14036298 BLACK ANTI-DIESEL 14036280 BLUE WIDE-OPEN THROTTLE 14036279 GREEN

GR. 5 BRAKE NOISE- 1982 CIMARRONS

SOME EARLY 1982 CIMARONS WERE MANUFACTURED WITH FRONT DISC BRAKE PADS WITHOUT NOISE INSULATORS. THIS MAY RESULT IN BRAKE "SQUEAL" DURING SOME BRAKE APPLICATIONS. THE CONDITION CAN BE CORRECTED BY REPLACING ONLY THE INBOARD FRONT BRAKE PADS. ALL PARTS AVAILABLE THROUGH GMWDD HAVE NOISE INSULATORS ATTACHED. WHEN ORDERING RE- PLACEMENT BRAKE PADS BOTH THE INNER AND OUTER PADS ARE SUPPLIED BUT ONLY THE INBOARD PAD SHOULD BE REPLACED.

GR. 6A DIESEL ENGINE EXCESSIVE SMOKE AND LOW POWER

A MALFUNCTIONING EPR SYSTEN CAN CAUSE BLACK SMOKE AND LOW POWER. IF THE INJECTION PUMP DRIVE GEAR DOES NOT SEAT FLUSH ON THE FRONT OF THE CAMSHAFT, THIS CAN ALSO CAUSE EXCESSIVE SMOKE AND LOW POWER. IF THE FUEL SYSTEM AND EPR SYSTEMS ARE WORKING PROPERLY, MAKE SURE THE GEAR SEATS TO THE FRONT OF THE CAM.

A SIMILAR CONDITION OF BLACK SMOKE AND LOW POWER FROM A DIESEL ENGINE WAS DISCUSSED IN A QSI NOTE IN SERVICEMAN BULLETIN 81-58, GR. 6A, NUMBER 15, DATED MAY, '81.

GR. 6A DED DIESEL INJECTION NOZZLES

DED MAY HAVE MANUFACTURED SOME NOZZLES WITH SOFT EDGE FILTERS THAT LOOSEN AND BREAK UP WITH USE. THIS MAY RESULT IN A PIECE OF MATERIAL INTERMITTENTLY HOLDING THE VALVE OPEN WHICH WILL CAUSE A LOUD ENGINE KNOCK.

THE "EDGE FILTER" IS LOCATED IN THE INSIDE OF THE NOZZLE. LOOKING DOWN FROM THE TOP, IT IS RECTANGULAR SHAPED, APPROXIMATELY 3/16 INCH LONG AND 1/8 INCH WIDE. THERE IS DISTANCE BETWEEN THE NOZZLE BODY AND EDGE FILTER TO ALLOW THE FUEL TO PASS. ANY NOZZLE WHICH TEST SATISFACTORY, BUT HAS A LOOSE "EDGE FILTER", REQUIRES REPLACEMENT OF THE INLET FITTING. THE INLET FITTING SHOULD BE REMOVED AND A NEW INLET FITTING, PART NUMBER 5233668, INSTALLED AND TORQUED TO 60 N.M (45 FT. LBS.). A DEEP BROACH SOCKET IS REQUIRED. DO NOT CLAMP NOZZLE IN VISE. THE NOZZLE SHOULD THEN BE TESTED, REFER TO PAGE 6A- 77 OF THE 1981 SERVICE MANUAL.

GR. 6B THERMOSTAT R&R PROCEDURE CHANGE

A CHANGE ON E/K CARS WITH A 6.0 LITER ENGINE SHOULD BE NOTED ON PAGE 6-B9, 1981 SERVICE INFORMATION MANUAL. STEP 2 OF THE THERMOSTAT "REMOVAL" PROCEDURE SHOULD NOT SPECIFY THE C-SERIES ONLY BECAUSE THE A/C COMPRESSOR HAS TO BE PARTIALLY REMOVED ON ALL SERIES (C, E, AND K). THIS STEP (2) SHOULD READ "PARTIALLY REMOVE A/C COMPRESSOR". THE LABOR TIME GUIDE ALLOWANCE HAS BEEN CHANGED TO REFLECT THIS NEW PROCEDURE; OPERATION J3500 NOW ALLOWS 0.8 HOUR FOR C, E, AND K.

GR. 6B COOLANT CHANGE TO MINIMIZE REPEAT HEATER CORE REPLACEMENTS

THE ABRASIVE ACTION OF RUST PARTICLES IN COOLANT AS IT FLOWS THROUGH THE HEATER CORE CAN AGGRAVATE EROSION OR CORROSION CONDITIONS WITHIN A CORE RESULTING IN LEAKAGE. WHEN A HEATER CORE IS REPLACED, A VISU- AL INSPECTION OF THE COOLANT SHOULD BE MADE. IF THE COOLANT IS OB- SERVED TO CONTAIN SEDIMENT OR IS BLACK, BROWN OR RUST IN APPEARANCE, THE COOLING SYSTEM SHOULD BE FLUSHED AND REFILLED AS SPECIFIED IN THE MAINTENANCE AND LUBRICATION SECTION OF THE SERVICE MANUAL. THIS PRO- CEDURE WILL MINIMIZE REPEATED HEATER CORE REPLACEMENTS.

GR. 6C COMPUTER COMMAND CONTROL MIXTURE CONTROL SOLENOID NOISE-1981

IF AN ENGINE NOISE CONDITION SIMILAR TO A NOISY LIFTER IS ENCOUNTERED, THE CAUSE MAY BE THE MIXTURE CONTROL SOLENOID. IT CAN BE VERIFIED AS THE SOLENOID BY LOOSENING THE AIR CLEANER WING NUT.

TO HELP DAMPEN THE NOISE, IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT TWO AIR HORN GASKETS BE USED AND THAT RUBBER OR FELT BE USED UNDER A FLAT WASHER AND THE WING NUT. TIGHTEN THE WING NUT JUST ENOUGH TO COMPRESS THE AIR CLEANER SUFFICIENTLY TO RETAIN IT IN PLACE.

GR. 6C CANISTER PURGE VALVE SERVICE PROCEDURES REVISED - 1982 CIMARRON

THE CANISTER PURGE VALVE DISASSEMBLY AND ASSEMBLY PROCEDURES, SHOWN ON PAGE 6C2-5 OF THE 1982 CIMARRON SERVICE MANUAL, ARE INCORRECT. IF IT HAS BEEN DETERMINED THAT THE CANISTER PURGE VALVE IS INOPERATIVE, THE COMPLETE CANISTER ASSEMBLY MUST BE REPLACED.

GR. 6D IGNITION TIMING ADJUSTMENT - 1982 CIMARRON

WHEN SETTING IGNITION TIMING ACCORDING TO THE VEHICLE EMISSION CONTROL INFORMATION LABEL AND USING THE AVERAGING METHOD AS DESCRIBED ON PAGE 6D-19 OF THE 1982 CIMARRON SERVICE MANUAL, THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT MAY ILLUMINATE AND SET TRIPLE CODE 41 IN STORED MEMORY. AFTE R THE FOUR WIRE EST CONNECTOR IS RECONNECTED AND THE ADJUSTMENT IS CMPLETED REMOVE THE ECM #1 FUSE TO CLEAR THE TROUBLE CODE MEMORY. THE "CHECK ENGINE" IS THE REUSLT OF THE TIMING ADJUSTMENT, NOT A MALFUNCTION IN THE COMPUTER COMMAND CONTROL SYSTEM.

GR. 6D ENGINE DETONATION - 1981 4.1 LITER V-6 ENGINES

ENGINE DETONATION ON LIGHT THROTTLE ON 1981 4.1 LITER V-6 ENGINES MAY BE CAUSED BY THE EST HARNESS BEING ROUTED TOO CLOSE TO A SPARK PLUG WIRE. THE DETONATION CONDITION CAN BE CORRECTED BY MAKING SURE THERE IS AT LEAST 1" OF CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE EST HARNESS AND THE PLUG WIRES.

GR. 6D CIMARRON TIMING CHECK AND ADJUST USING TOOL J-29828.

THE IGNITION TIMING PROCEDURE AS PUBLISHED IN SECTION 6D, PAGES 6D- 19 AND 6D-21, OF THE 1982 CIMARRON SERVICE MANUAL DOES NOT INCLUDE STEPS FOR GAINING ACCESS TO THE DISTRIBUTOR HOLD DOWN NUT ON 1982 CIMARRONS WITH MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS.

WHEN USING THE DISTRIBUTOR TOOL J-29828 TO ADJUST THE TIMING ON SUBJECT VEHICLES, IT IS NECESSARY TO LOOSEN THE SOLENOID FROM THE A.I.R. CONTROL VALVE AS FOLLOWS:

A. PRIOR TO PERFORMING STEP 4 OF THE SERVICE MANUAL PROCEDURE:

1. RAISE VEHICLE ON HOIST.

2. REMOVE SCREW (A). (REFER TO FIGURE ON NEXT PAGE).

3. LOOSEN SCREW (B) AND ROTATE SOLENOID DOWNWARD (HOSES AND WIRES ATTACHED).

4. LOWER VEHICLE AND LOOSEN DISTRIBUTOR NUT USING TOOL J-29828.

B. AFTER COMPLETION OF STEP 5 OF THE SERVICE MANUAL PROCEDURE:

1. RAISE VEHICLE, REINSTALL SCREW (A) AND TIGHTEN SCREW (B).

GR. 6D BATTERY DIAGNOSIS

A BLACK EYE MAY BE MISINTERPRETED AS A CLEAR OR LIGHT YELLOW EYE WHEN INPECTING A FREEDOM II BATTERY. THIS IS CAUSED BY LIGHT FILTEING THROUGH THE NEW TRANSLUCENT CASE. SHAKE THE BATTERY TO DETERMINE THE FLUID LEVEL AND SHIELD THE BATTERY SIDES FORM LIGHT TO DETERMINE THE TRUE EYE COLOR BEFOR REPLACING A BATTERY.

GR. 6D IDLE SPEED CONTROL ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES REVISED - 1982 CIMARRON

THE IDLE SPEED CONTROL ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES, SHOWN ON PAGE 6C1-11 OF THE 1982 CIMARRON SERVICE MANUAL, HAVE BEEN REVISED.

WHEN ADJUSTING THE IDLE SPEED CONTROL PLUNGER, DO NOT PLACE THE AUTO- MATIC TRANSMISSION IN "DRIVE" AS INDICATED IN STEP 12. PLEASE MAKE NOTE OF THIS IN YOUR SERVICE MANUAL.

GR. 7 THM 200-4R TRANSMISSION - 81 ESSENTIAL TOOL J-29714

CIMARRON SERVICING DEALERS WERE RECENTLY SHIPPED A THM 200-4R COVER DEPRESSOR TOOL ALONG WITH THE CIMARRON ESSENTIAL TOLL PACKAGE. NON- CIMARRON SERVICING DEALERS WERE SHIPPED THIS TOOL SEPARATELY. A PRODUCTION CHANGE TO A DOUBLE SPRING, INSTEAD OF A SINGLE SPRING, IN BEHIND THE SERVO COVER HAS BEEN MADE. THIS ADDITIONAL SPRING MAKES THE COVER DIFFICULT TO DEPRESS WHEN REMOVING THE RETAINER RING. THIS NEW TOOL, NUMBER J-29714, CAN BE USED TO REMOVE THE COVER ON THESE LATER TRANSMISSIONS.

GR. 7 THM 325 2-3 DELAYED SHIFT

A DELAYED 2-3 SHIFT ON THM 325 AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS MAY BE CAUSED BY AN IMPROPERLY SIZED INTERMEDIATE BAND APPLY PIN. REFER TO THE 1981 SERVICE MANUAL (FIGURE 7B-37, INTERMEDIATE BAND APPLY PIN SELEC- TION CHART) FOR CORRECT PIN USAGE. DIMENSION FOR 2-RING APPLY PIN SHOULD BE AS FOLLOWS: 72MM-1.44MM (.029"-.057").

GR. 7 CIMARRON MANUAL TRANSMISSION SHIFTER KNOB LOOSE

A MANUAL TRANSMISSION SHIFTER KNOB THAT WORKS LOOSE ON A 1982 CIMAR- RON CAN BE TIGHTENED BY TAPPING THE EXISTING SET SCREW HOLE WITH A 6M TAP (6-1.00) AND INSTALLING A 6M SET SCREW. NO OVERSIZE DRILLING IS NECESSARY.

FOR WARRANTY PURPOSES, USE OPERATION NO. K1040 AT 0.2 HOUR.

GR. 8 PANDUIT STRAPS ("CHICKEN BANDS") USAGE ON HOSES, CABLES, AND WIRING

WHEN SERVICING A VEHICLE, IT WILL OFTEN BE NECESSARY TO CUT AND DIS- CARD THE PLASTIC PANDUIT STRAPS ("CHICKEN BANDS") THAT HOLD VAIOUS HOSES, CABLES, AND WIRING IN THEIR PROPER PLACES. IN ORDER TO MAIN- TAIN A NEATER UNDERHOOD APPEARANCE AND TO PREVENT THESE HOSES AND WIRES FROM HANGING IN AN ENVIRONMENT THEY WERE NOT INTENDED FOR, THE CUT STRAPS SHOULD BE REPLACED WITH NEW ONES RATHER THAN USING TAPE OR ALLOWING COMPONENTS TO HANG LOOSE. SERVICE STRAP PARTS ARE LISTED BELOW.

PART NO. QUANTITY DESCRIPTION

3816659 10 7" STRAP 409747 1 11" STRAP

GR. 8 CIMARRON CODE 42

IT IS POSSIBLE TO STORE A FALSE CODE 42 ON A 1982 CIMARRON. THIS MAY HAPPEN IF A FALSE START OCCURS AND THE RE-START IS ACCOMPLISHED WITHOUT FIRST TURNING THE IGNITION SWITCH TO THE "OFF" POSITION.

WHEN DIAGNOSING FOR A "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT AND A CODE 42 IS FOUND DURING THE SYSTEM PERFORMANCE CHECK, COMPLETE THE CHECK. IF CODE 42 DOES NOT REAPPEAR, THE SYSTEM IS OK AND A FALSE CODE 42 WAS SET.

GR.9 ANTENNA RELAY, 1981 VEHICLES

A NEW ANTENNA RELAY (P/N 1623156) IS NOW AVAILABLE THROUGH GMWDD FOR USE IN 1981 C, E, AND K VEHICLES. WHEN RELAY REPLACEMENT IS REQUIRED, THE NEW RELAY SHOULD BE USED. THE OLD RELAY, PART NUMBER 1622758, IS STILL AVAILABLE FOR USE IN OTHER APPLICATIONS.

GR. 10 CIMARRON ACCENT PAINT

THE FLAT BLACK PAINT USED AS AN ACCENT COLOR ON ALL 1982 CIMARRONS IS 30 GLOSS BLACK PAINT MATERIAL, COLOR CODE 08. THE SUPPLIERS AND OR- DERING CODES FOR THIS PAINT ARE:

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
