Due to the critical shortage of Electronic Control Units (ECU's), it is requested that all dealers return to GMWDD any excess inventory of new service parts, and all cores for the following service part numbers:
1608824 1614448 1608825 1614450 1610826 1616207 1614446 1616208
The following administrative changes have been implemented in order to expedite the return of ECU's:
1. Core returns will no longer require an original shipping carton. Suitable packaging to avoid unit damage in shipping is required.
2. The core charge has been increased from $75 or $125 to $300. The new core charge of $300 will be credited for any parts or cores returned.
3. If the ECU Core information tag is not available, GMWDD form number PC659 should be completed and packed with return ECU's.
It is essential that all cores and excess inventory be returned as soon as possible in order to alleviate this parts shortage condition.
Some original production ECU's have only a production part number and no service part number listedon the unit. To avoid the possibility of cores being returned due to an invalid service part number, all units carrying only the production part number should be cross-referenced to the appropriate service part number by the dealership when returning the core. Refer to the following cross-reference list:
Production Number Service Number ----------------- -------------- 1607250 1608824 1608341 1608825 1610814 1610826 1612949 1614446 1612953 1614448 1612947 1614450 1615137 1618810 1615139 1616207 1615173 1616208
Due to the critical shortage of these service parts, only orders involving specific vehicles should be placed and no inventory orders should be made. Please refer to the GMWDD "Parts and Accessories Information Bulletin" number 84-231K dated December 26, 1984, for special order processing information pertaining to these parts. Also, please refer to GMWDD "Parts and Accessories Information Bulletin" number 85-61K, dated April 5, 1985, which provides a special order procedure for P/N 1618810 ECU's in "vehicle down" situations.
If you should have any difficulty returning ECU's or ordering ECU's for a "vehicle down" situation, please contact your GM Parts' District Manager or your Cadillac District Service Manager.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
