INCORRECT DOOR AJAR MESSAGES OPERATION AND REPAIR DESCRIBED

MODELS AFFECTED: 1988 SEVILLES

Some 1988 Sevilles built between VIN 800019 and 808371 may display incorrect door ajar messages on the driver information center. This may be caused by incorrect programming of the BCM EEPROM at assembly.

The Eldorado and Seville display door ajar warnings when the engine is running, car is in any drive gear (R, D, 3, 2, 1), and any door is ajar. Normal operation of the door ajar message on the Seville is to display "FRONT DOOR AJAR" with either front door open and "REAR DOOR AJAR" with either rear door open.

Sevilles which are misprogrammed will display the "DRIVER DOOR AJAR" message when either driver or passenger front door is opened. The "PASSENGER DOOR AJAR" message is displayed when either rear door is opened.

To repair the condition, the BCM override feature of on-board dia nostics (refer to the 1988 Vehicle Diagnostic System booklet for DeVille, Eldorado, and Seville can be used as follows:

1. Enter diagnostics by pressing "OFF" and "WARMER" for three seconds.

2. Allow the trouble codes to display and respond to "ECM?" by pressing "LO".

3. Respond to "BCM?" by pressing "HI".

4. Respond to "BCM DATA?" by pressing "LO".

5. Respond to "BCM INPUTS?" by pressing "LO".

6. Respond to "BCM OUTPUTS?" by pressing "LO".

7. Respond to "BCM OVERRIDES?" by pressing "HI".

8. Select override BS08 by pressing "HI" until BS08 appears. The displayed value for a Seville should be 129. If the value is 129 and there is a customer complaint about "DOOR AJAR" messages, see 8A-301 in the 1987 Eldorado/Seville Service Information Manual or 8A-301 in the 1988 Eldorado/Seville Final Edition Service Information Manual when available.

9. If BS08 is not 129, press "WARMER" to increase or "COOLER" to decrease the value to arrive at 129. When the display reads 129, press "INST ECON" and "ECON" buttons simultaneously for five seconds to reset. The value 129 will flash off then on to indicate a successful reset.

10. Turn the engine off and restart the vehicle and retest for proper door ajar operation.

For warranty purposes use Labor Operation T6284 at .2 hour. "CADILLAC DISCLAIMER"
