FALSE 'CHANGE ENGINE OIL' MESSAGE-RESET OIL LIFE INDEX

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1989-90 E,K,V

Some 1989-90 Allantes, Eldorados, and Sevilles may present the owner with a false "Change Engine Oil" message at key on after the start of a new decade (i.e., on or after January 1, in the years 1990, 2000, 2010, etc.). This condition will occur on all vehicles which have had the oil life index previously reset. To repair this condition:

1. Obtain the mileage and time since the last oil change from the customer. Determine if oil change is required. Refer to schedule in Owner's Manual. If an oil change is indicated, recommend to owner that an oil change be performed.

2a. If customer elects to have oil changed: Perform oil change. Reset the oil life index following the procedure listed in Section 8C of the Final Service Information Manual.

2b. If oil change is not required and/or customer elects not to have oil changed: Reset the oil life index following the procedure listed in Section 8C of the Final Service Information Manual. Advise the customer that the next oil change should be determined using mileage or time (per the schedule in the Owner's Manual) rather than using the oil life monitor. Additionally, advise owner that the oil life monitor should be reset after the next oil change per instructions in the Owner's Manual.

The oil life monitor will function correctly once reset after an oil change.

Future releases of BCM service EPROM's will contain a correction for this condition.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
