CADILLAC OIL FILTER USAGE (INFORMATION)

SUBJECT: CADILLAC OIL FILTER USAGE (INFORMATION)

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1993 "E", "K", "V" MODELS

Introduction of the 4.6L Northstar powertrain system in 1993 Eldorados, Sevilles, and Allantes included the first use of the PF58 oil filter. This filter is shorter than the PF45 filter previously used on 4.5L and 4.9L Cadillac V8 engines and is used to provide adequate ground clearance during all driving conditions. The PF58 filter must always be used on 4.6L engine vehicles. The PF45 filter, if used on 4.6L engines, may contact the road surface under some driving conditions and should not be substituted.

Some time after 1993 start of production, Cadillac began using the shorter PF58 filter on 4.9L engine vehicles also. Our intent was to standardize Cadillac oil filters. Currently, however, the manufacturer is experiencing restrictions upon their ability to produce enough PF58 filter's to supply dealer orders. Until we are able to eliminate these supply restrictions, dealers should continue to use the PF45 on 4.9L engine vehicles and restrict usage of the PF58 to the 4.6L engine.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
