CONDITION OF CORE RETURN (GENERAL INFORMATION)

********************************************************************** TRANSAXLE APPLICATIONS: SUBJECT: 1993 HYDRA-MATIC 4T80-E (RP0 MH1) CONDITION OF CORE RETURN (GENERAL INFORMATION)

TRANSAXLE MODELS: VEHICLE APPLICATIONS: ALL 1993 V, E, K-CAR **********************************************************************

THIS BULLETIN IS TO EMPHASIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF FOLLOWING THE "SERVICE REPLACEMENT TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY (SRTA) PROGRAM INTRODUCTION AND ON-VEHICLE REPAIR GUIDELINES" FROM SERVICE BULLETIN CORPORATE REFERENCE NO.: 277113R.

BULLETIN COVERS:

RECENTLY, SOME 4T80-E UNITS WERE RETURNED DAMAGED AND/OR IMPROPERLY PACKAGED CAUSING DAMAGE TO OCCUR IN TRANSIT. THE DAMAGE RANGED FROM BENT BELL HOUSINGS (DURING REMOVAL FROM VEHICLE) TO DAMAGED PUMP SHAFTS (FROM CONVERTER ASSEMBLIES NOT PROPERLY FASTENED WITH SHIPPING BRACKET) DURING TRANSIT. SOME WERE DAMAGED SO SEVERELY THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO BE TESTED ON THE AUTOMATIC TEST EQUIPMENT (FINAL TEST STANDS). THIS REDUCED THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE ANALYSIS PROCESS AND VALUABLE PRODUCT IMPROVEMENT KNOWLEDGE MAY HAVE BEEN LOST. THIS INFORMATION IS CRITICAL FOR CURRENT PRODUCT IMPROVEMENT AND FUTURE PRODUCT REFINEMENT.

IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT THE UNITS BE RETURNED WITH ALL SHIPPING PLUGS AND SHIPPING BRACKETS IN PLACE. THIS WILL INSURE THE UNIT IS NOT DAMAGED DURING TRANSIT AND THE SRTA PRODUCT FEEDBACK AND THE PCM ADAPTIVE CONTROL INFORMATION FORM (INCLUDED WITH EACH SRTA) IS LEGIBLE AND NOT CONTAMINATED WITH TRANSMISSION FLUID.

IMPORTANT: IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT THE SRTA FEEDBACK AND PCM ADAPTIVE CONTROL INFORMATION FORM BE FILLED OUT COMPLETELY (WHERE APPLICABLE) WHEN RETURNING A CORE UNIT. THIS INFORMATION IS NECESSARY FOR ANALYSIS AND PRODUCT IMPROVEMENT.

SERVICE MANUAL REFERENCE:

REFER TO YOUR 1993 SERVICE MANUAL "AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE ON-VEHICLE SERVICE" SECTION FOR INFORMATION ON HOW TO PROPERLY REMOVE AND INSTALL A 4T80-E TRANSAXLE.

IMPORTANT: CARE MUST BE TAKEN WHEN REMOVING A 4T80-E TRANSAXLE TO REDUCE THE POSSIBILITY OF DAMAGE TO THE UNIT AND VEHICLE.

CAUTION:

THE 4T80-E TRANSAXLE IS CONSIDERABLY HEAVIER THAN OTHER TRANSAXLES. THE TRANSAXLE WEIGHT SHOULD BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT WHEN HANDLING/ MOVING THE UNIT OR INJURY MAY RESULT.

DRY: 117.56 KG (259.17 LB.) WET: 129.80 KG (286.08 LB.)

IMPORTANT: FIELD FEEDBACK INFORMATION IS NECESSARY FOR SUCCESS ON ANY NEW PRODUCT. IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT 4T80-E CORES BE RETURNED FOR ANALYSIS IN A TIMELY MANNER.

GENERAL MOTORS BULLETINS ARE INTENDED FOR USE BY PROFESSIONAL TECHNICIANS, NOT A "DO-IT-YOURSELFER." THEY ARE WRITTEN TO INFORM THOSE TECHNICIANS OF CONDITIONS OCCURRING ON SOME VEHICLES, OR TO PROVIDE INFORMATION THAT COULD ASSIST IN THE PROPER SERVICE OF A VEHICLE. PROPERLY TRAINED TECHNICIANS HAVE THE EQUIPMENT, TOOLS, SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS AND KNOW-HOW TO DO A JOB PROPERLY AND SAFELY. IF A CONDITION IS DESCRIBED, DO NOT ASSUME THE BULLETIN APPLIES TO YOUR VEHICLE, OR THAT YOUR VEHICLE WILL HAVE THAT CONDITION. SEE A GENERAL MOTORS DEALER SERVICING YOUR BRAND OF GENERAL MOTORS VEHICLE FOR INFORMATION ON WHETHER YOUR VEHICLE MAY BENEFIT FROM THE INFORMATION.
