The headlamps can be turned on three different ways. The headlamps will turn on when the headlamp switch is placed in the ON position. If the headlamp switch is left in the ON position, the headlamps will be deactivated after 10 minutes following a ignition switch transition to the OFF position because of the battery rundown protection. If the headlamp switch is turned on with the ignition switch in the OFF position, there is not a time out and the headlamps will remain on until the headlamp switch is turned off or the battery runs down. With the twilight sentinel in an ON position, the headlamps will automatically turn on during nighttime conditions when the ignition switch is in the ON or START position. With the twilight sentinel in an ON position, the headlamps will automatically turn on after 6 seconds when the windshield wipers are turned on and the ignition switch is in the ON position. The headlamps will remain on when the ignition switch is turned to the ACCY position.
A HEADLAMPS SUGGESTED message will appear on the driver information center (DIC) when the headlamps and park lamps are off due to all exterior lighting controls being inactive when it is sufficiently dark enough to use headlamps. The message will also appear if the wiper activated headlamps feature is off due to the twilight sentinel being off, but the windshield wipers are on.
When the low beam headlamps are on, the headlamps can be switched to the high beams by pushing the headlamp dimmer switch away from the driver. When the headlamp dimmer switch is pulled back, the headlamps will then switch to the low beams from the high beams. For Norway and Sweden, the high beam headlamps will light in addition to the low beam headlamp when the headlamp dimmer switch is pushed.
The twilight sentinel is a convenience system that controls the operation of the exterior lamps in response to the level of ambient light. It turns on and off the headlamps depending on whether nighttime or daytime conditions are sensed. It will also keep the exterior lamps on for a pre-selected period of time after the ignition is turned to the OFF position with nighttime conditions sensed. The exterior lamps will be turned off automatically after the delay period elapses. The delay period ranges from a few seconds to 3 minutes in approximately 10 second increments.
The daytime running lamps (DRL) illuminate the high beam headlamps at a reduced intensity. The DRL will operate when the ignition switch is in the ON or START position and the gear selector lever is out of the PARK position. Any function that turns on the headlamps will override and disable the DRL system.
The daytime running lamps (DRL) illuminate the low beam headlamps at a regular intensity. The park lamps will also be activated. The DRL will operate when the ignition switch is in the ON or START position and the gear selector lever is out of the PARK position. Any function that turns on either set of headlamps will override and disable the DRL system.
When the headlamp dimmer switch is pulled toward the driver, the high beam headlamps will light for as long as the switch is held. This will occur in any headlamp state (off, DRL, low beams). If the low beams are on, the high beam headlamps will light in addition to the low beams.
The front fog lamp switch is a momentary switch, so pressing it will change the front fog lamp from off to on or on to off. The state of the front fog lamps will remain the same until the front fog lamp switch is pressed, even between ignition cycles. The front fog lamps is operational only when the ignition switch is in the ON or START position and the front fog lamp state is on. The front fog lamps will not be on any time the high beam headlamps are on. When the front fog lamps are on, the park lamps will also be activated.
The rear fog lamps are on export vehicles only. The rear fog lamp switch is a momentary switch, so pressing it will change the rear fog lamp state from off to on or on to off. The state of the rear fog lamps will return to off between ignition cycles. It must be reinitiated with each ignition cycle. The rear fog lamps can only be operational when the ignition switch is in the ON or START position, the rear fog lamp state is on, and the headlamps or front fog lamps are on. If a flash-to-pass function is performed, the rear fog lamps will not turn off.
Perimeter Lighting involves activating the vehicle's park lamps, backup lamps, and high beam headlamps for 20 seconds until a door is opened or the ignition is removed from the OFF position, after a driver's door unlock command using the keyless entry transmitter. This function will happen only if perimeter lighting is enabled for the vehicle or driver and the park lamps are off, the ignition switch is OFF, all door are closed, and the ambient light sensor indicates nighttime conditions.
Perimeter lighting can be programmed to be either enabled or disabled for all drivers of the vehicle through the driver information center (DIC) if the vehicle does not have the personalization option. Perimeter lighting can be programmed to be either enabled or disabled for each driver of the vehicle through the driver information center (DIC) if the vehicle has the personalization option.
The park lamps will turn on when the headlamp switch is placed in the PARK or ON position. If the headlamp switch is left in the PARK or ON position, the park lamps will be deactivated after 10 minutes following a ignition switch transition to the OFF position because of the battery rundown protection. With the twilight sentinel in an ON position, the park lamps will automatically turn on along with the headlamps during nighttime conditions when the ignition switch is in the ON or START position. With the twilight sentinel in an ON position, the park lamps will automatically turn on along with the headlamps when the windshield wipers are turned on and the vehicle is in the ON or ACCY position. The park lamps will also turn on if the front fog lamps are activated.
The turn lamps can only be activated with the ignition switch in the ON or START position. When the turn signal switch is placed in a position to indicate a left turn or a right turn, the respective turn lamps will flash. The respective turn indicator will flash on the instrument cluster (IPC).
When ignition switch is in the RUN or START position, the park lamps are on, and the turn signal switch is placed in a position to indicate a left turn or a right turn, the respective cornering lamp will light.
On export vehicles, the headlamp switch has left and right position lamp positions. When the gear selector is in the PARK position and the headlamp switch is in either the LH or RH position lamp position, the appropriate position lamp and tail lamp lights.
When the hazard switch is pressed, all turn lamps will flash. Both turn indicators will flash on the instrument cluster (IPC).
When the brake pedal is pressed, all stop lamps and the center high mounted stop lamps (CHMSL) light. The hazard lamps and turn lamps override the stop lamp operation, except for the center high mounted stop lamps (CHMSL).
When the ignition switch is in the ON position and the gear selector lever is in the REVERSE position, the backup lamps light.
Each reading lamp can be manually turned on and off using the respective switch.
The courtesy lamps, including the reading lamps, can be manually turned on or off by placing the interior lamp switch in the ON or OFF position. When the interior lamp switch is in the AUTO position, the ambient light sensor indicates nighttime conditions, and a front door is opened, the foot well courtesy lamps, all door courtesy lamps, and the overhead console courtesy lamps turn on. When the interior lamp switch is in the AUTO position, the ambient light sensor indicates nighttime conditions, and a rear door is opened, all courtesy lamps turn on. After all doors are closed, the courtesy lamps of the last door closed will remain on for approximately 25 seconds. The courtesy lamps will deactivate immediately , if the ignition switch is turned to RUN, the interior lamp switch is placed in the OFF position, or an all door lock command is received with all doors closed.
When the interior lamp switch is in the AUTO position, the ambient light sensor indicates nighttime conditions, and the keyless entry transmitter is used to unlock the vehicle, all courtesy lamps turn on for approximately 40 seconds. The courtesy lamps will deactivate immediately, if the ignition switch is turned to the ON position, the interior lamp switch is placed in the OFF position, or an all door lock command is received with all doors closed. After deployment of the supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR), all courtesy lamps will light after an approximately 15 second delay period. After SIR deployment, the courtesy lamps will only be deactivated when the ignition switch is removed from the ON position.
When the park lamps are on and the hood is opened, the underhood lamp lights.
When the rear compartment lid is opened, the rear compartment lamp lights.
When the vanity mirror cover on the sunshade is opened, the vanity lamp lights. The vanity lamp can be dimmed through sliding switch next to the mirror.
When the IP compartment is opened, IP compartment lamp lights.
When the courtesy lamps are on, the ignition key cylinder lamp is also on.
When the ignition switch is in the ON position, the vacuum fluorescent (VF) displays turn on at maximum brightness. When the park lamps are on and the ambient light sensor indicates nighttime conditions, all incandescent switch backlighting turns on at the dimming level indicated by the IP dimmer switch and all VF displays dim to match the dimming level indicated by the IP dimmer switch. When the IP dimmer switch is moved from MIN to MAX, all VF displays and incandescent switch backlighting dimming level goes from minimum intensity to maximum brightness in response to the IP dimmer switch.
