Circuit Description

The Instrument Cluster (IPC) contains a data storage area known as keep alive memory (KAM). The KAM is used by the IPC to save pertinent data when the ignition switch is turned to OFF. KAM data is lost if battery power is removed from the IPC.

Important: The KAM area is an integral part of the IPC's microprocessor and cannot be serviced separately.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

DTC B1652 indicates that the keep alive (long term) memory (KAM) in the IPC has been reset. This is a normal occurrence whenever power or ground is removed from the IPC, such as battery disconnected and reconnected.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

IPC KAM memory resets to initial values.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

    • The DTC sets history if the IPC no longer detects a KAM failure (checksum error). However, this DTC also requires an ignition cycle in order to change from current to history.
    • A history DTC clears after 50 consecutive ignition cycles.
    • A current or history DTC may be cleared using a scan tool.
    • A current or history DTC may be cleared using the vehicle's On-Boards diagnostics.

Diagnostic Aids

If DTC B1652 sets without a battery disconnect, ensure good terminal contacts at power feed CKT 440 (ORN) at connector C2 terminal A1, ground CKT 450 (BLK) at connector C2 terminal B7 and ground CKT 351 (BLK/WHT) at connector C2 terminal B6. If power and ground are OK, clear the DTC if the DTC sets current and replace the IPC.

Test Description

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table:

  1. Perform the Instrument Cluster Diagnostic System Check before continuing with the diagnosis of this DTC.

  2. Clear all DTCs and cycle ignition to check that the DTC did not falsely set.

  3. Clear all DTCs after the repair procedure is complete.
