The PCM calculates gear ratio based on data from the automatic transmission
input shaft speed and vehicle speed sensors. The PCM compares the known transmission
gear ratio to a calculated ratio for each commanded gear.
If the PCM detects an incorrect 1st gear ratio, indicating excessive
slip or drag within the transmission, then DTC P0731 sets. DTC P0731
is a type C DTC.
The PCM commands 1st gear and one of the following conditions occurs
for 0.75 second:
The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

- Install a scan tool.
- Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
Important: Before clearing the DTC, use the scan tool in order to record the Failure
Records. Using the Clear Info function erases the Failure Records from the
PCM.
- Record the DTC Failure Records.
- Clear the DTC.
- Use the scan tool snapshot mode in order to record commanded gear
and gear ratio.
- Drive the vehicle in D1 and record the 1st gear ratio.

- Inspect the following items:
• | The forward clutch assembly for: |
- | Snap ring (818) out of position or damaged |
- | Clutch plates (816, 817, 819, 840 and 841) slipping, dragging
or damaged |
- | Apply ring (811) seized or damaged |
- | Piston (807) cracked or damaged |
- | Piston seals (808 and 809) rolled, worn or damaged |
- | Release spring assembly (820) damaged |
- | Housing checkball (437) blocked by debris or damaged |
• | The forward sprag clutch (716 through 721) not holding
or damaged |
• | The low/reverse servo assembly for: |
- | Piston (928) cracked or damaged |
- | Piston seals (929 and 930) rolled, worn or damaged |
- | Apply pin (931) seized or damaged |
- | Piston return spring (901) or cushion spring (934)
damaged |
• | The low/reverse band (13) slipping, dragging, or damaged |
• | The low/roller clutch (830) not holding or damaged |

- Change the AT fluid and filter.
Refer to Fluid Filter
Replacement.
- Inspect the AT fluid for correct level.
- Add new fluid as necessary.
Important: The Clear TAPS function will clear all adapt cells. This may affect
transmission performance. The PCM will update the adapt cell values as the
vehicle is driven.
- Use the scan tool in order to perform the following:
• | Reset oil life monitor to 100%. |
