Schematic Reference: Tilt/Telescoping Steering Column Schematics

DEFINITION: This table is for a tilt/telescoping steering column system in which only the telescope functions are inoperative

Did you perform the Tilt/Telescoping Steering Column Diagnostic System Check?

Verify that the Tilt function is inoperative.

Does the Tilt function operate normally?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. Observe the Telescope Tilt Switch parameter in the Tilt/Telescope Module Data Display list.

Does the scan tool indicate the Idle state?

Go to Step 4

With the scan tool, observe the Telescope Tilt Switch parameter in the Tilt/Telescope Module Data Display list while activating the tilt/telescoping switch to the Up and Down positions.

Did the parameter change states as expected?

Go to Step 5

With the scan tool, observe the Telescope Tilt Output parameter in the Tilt/Telescope Module Data Display list while activating the tilt/telescoping switch to the Up and Down positions.

Did the parameter change states as expected?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the steering column tilt/telescoping switch harness connector.

Does the scan tool indicate the Idle state?

Test both of the tilt/telescoping steering column switch Up and Down signal circuits for an open or short to voltage. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the steering column tilt actuator control circuits for a short to voltage or an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the tilt actuator position sensor 5 volt reference and ground circuits for an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs .

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the tilt/telescoping steering column switch. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.
