Test Description

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. This step refers to the circuit with the MEM T&T 10A fuse.

  2. This step refers to the circuit with the PWR T&T 30A fuse.

  3. If either the tilt actuator or the telescope actuator displays Motor Current on the scan tool Data Display, as less than 0 amps and/or more than 10 amps in this step, go to the applicable chart for that actuator being inoperative.

  4. This step refers to the circuit with the PWR T&T 30A fuse.

Schematic Reference: Tilt/Telescoping Steering Column Schematics

DEFINITION: This test applies to a tilt/telescoping steering column that has no movement at all.

Did you perform the Tilt/Telescoping Steering Column Diagnostic System Check?

Operate the Tilt/Telescope system.

Does the Tilt/Telescope operate normally?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

Install a scan tool.

Does the scan tool communicate with the Tilt/Telescope Steering Column Module?

Go to Step 4

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Observe the Telescope/Tilt Switch parameter in the Tilt/Telescope Module Data Display list while activating the tilt/telescoping manual switch from the Idle position to the Up, Down, In, and Out positions.

Do the parameters change state as expected?

Test the B+ voltage circuit of the SCM for an open or short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs

Test the ground circuit of the SCM for an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs

Test the fuse for an open.

Is the fuse OK?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the Tilt/Telescoping Steering Column Module connector that contains both battery positive circuits and the ground circuit.
  3. Test the battery positive circuit for an open or a high resistance.

Did you find and correct the condition?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the Tilt/Telescoping Steering Column Module connector that contains both battery positive circuits and the ground circuit.
  3. Test the battery positive circuit for a short to ground or an open.

Did you find and correct the condition?

  1. Reconnect the Tilt/Telescoping Steering Column Module connector that contains both battery positive circuits and the ground circuits.
  2. Disconnect both the tilt actuator and the telescoping actuator harness connectors from the SCM.
  3. Replace the fuse.
  4. Turn ignition ON.
  5. Using the tilt/telescoping steering column switch, operate the power tilt and telescoping to all positions.

Did the fuse open again?

Go to Step 20

  1. Reconnect the tilt actuator harness connector.
  2. Using the power tilt/telescoping steering column switch, operate the power tilt and telescoping to all positions.

Did the fuse open again?

Go to Step 16

  1. Reconnect the telescope actuator harness connector.
  2. Using the power tilt/telescoping steering column switch, operate the power tilt and telescoping to all positions.

Did the fuse open again?

Disconnect the tilt/telescope switch at the SCM. Test the switch ground at the SCM with a test lamp.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 14

Inspect for poor connections/terminal tension at the tilt/telescoping steering column switch. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?

Inspect for poor connections/terminal tension at the harness connector of the Steering Column Module connector that contains both battery positive circuits and the ground circuit. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Inspect for a short to ground in the tilt actuator circuits.

Replace the tilt/telescoping steering column switch. Refer to Telescope Actuator Switch Replacement - On Vehicle .

Replace the steering column actuator that caused the fuse to open. Refer to Tilt Actuator Assembly Replacement - On Vehicle or Telescope Actuator Assembly Replacement - On Vehicle .

Important: Perform the set up procedure for the Tilt/Telescoping Steering Column Control Module.

Replace the tilt/telescoping steering column control module. Refer to Steering Column Control Module Replacement .
