Circuit Description

The power window motor front passenger up and down control and power window switch right front express signal circuits provide inputs to the passenger door module (PDM) when the passenger window switch is activated to the UP, DOWN, EXPRESS UP or EXPRESS DOWN positions. These inputs allow the PDM to detect a window UP, DOWN, EXPRESS UP or EXPRESS DOWN request. The PDM provides power to the passenger window switch. When the window switch is activated to the UP, DOWN, EXPRESS UP or EXPRESS DOWN position, ground is supplied by G202. When the PDM detects low voltage on one of the circuits, it will command the window in the UP, DOWN, EXPRESS UP or EXPRESS DOWN direction. The PDM monitors the circuits to determine how long the ground has been applied. If the PDM detects that a ground is applied for greater than 20 seconds, a DTC is set.

    • DTC B3170 Right Front Window Up Switch Circuit
    • DTC B3175 Right Front Window Down Switch Circuit
    • DTC B3280 Right Front Window Express Up or Down Circuit

Conditions for Setting the DTC

    • The PDM detects a short to ground on a window switch circuit.
    • Condition must be present for greater than 20 seconds.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

Stores DTC B3170, B3175 or B3280 in PDM memory.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

    • The PDM no longer detects a short to ground on a window switch circuit for greater than 20 seconds, and :
    • The DTC is cleared using a scan tool.

Diagnostic Aids

    • The following conditions may cause an intermittent malfunction:
       - There is an intermittent short to ground in the window switch circuit.
       - The window switch is shorted to ground internally or is sticking.
       - The window switch was pressed for longer than 20 seconds.
    • If the DTC does not reset after the code is cleared, then the problem may be intermittent. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems.

Test Description

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. Tests for the normal state of the passenger window switch using a scan tool. The scan tool will display the normal state as Idle, and Up, Down, Express Up or Express Down when the switch is activated.

  2. Tests if the PDM is able to detect a change in passenger window switch state. The scan tool will display the normal state as Idle, and Up, Down, Express Up or Express Down when the switch is activated.

  3. Tests for a stuck or shorted passenger window switch. If the passenger window switch is stuck or shorted, the state will change from Up, Down, Express Up or Express Down to Idle when the passenger window switch is disconnected.

  4. Tests for a short to ground in the window switch circuit.
