Tool Required

1. Remove the drain plug (25) and washer (24) and allow the fluid to drain.



2. Remove the fill plug (26) and washer (24).



3. Remove the cover - left (2) and bolts (7).
4. Remove the O-ring (9) and oil seal (6) from the cover and discard. Inspect dowel (10).
5. Remove the magnet (15) from the carrier.



6. Install the differential carrier (1) onto the J 42173  (2).

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

7. Install 4 M8 x 1.25 bolts (3).

Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 28 N·m (20 lb ft).




8. Remove the cover - right (3) and bolts (7) from the differential.
9. Remove the O-ring (9) and oil seal (6) from the cover and discard. Inspect dowel (10).



10. Remove the cover-rear (5), bolts (16), and O-ring (17).



11. Install 2 M10 x 1.5 nuts onto the transmission stud (22). Remove the stud from the differential.
12. Remove the bolts (21) and adapter (23) from the differential. Note and mark the position and direction of the adapter.



13. Remove the C-clip (115) from the output shaft.



14. Install the J 42155 into the groove of the output shaft in order to remove the differential case assembly.



15. Remove the pinion housing/cage bolts (7).



16. Heat the differential housing, around the pinion cartridge using J 25070 . Heating the housing will ease in pinion removal.



17. Remove the pinion cartridge/cage assembly (4) and shim (19) from the differential housing. Mark or tag the shim for assembly.

Locate 2 screwdrivers or pry bars to the flange area of the pinion housing/cage to ease in removal.




18. Install the J 42194 into the cover - right in order to remove the bearing race and shims.
19. Position the cover - right into a hydraulic press.



20. Using a hydraulic press, remove the bearing race (104) and shims (103). Mark or tag the shims for assembly.



21. Install the J 29369-2  (2) into the cover - left bearing.
22. Install the J 23907  (1) to the J 29369-2  (2) in order to remove the bearing.



23. Remove the bearing (8).



24. Install the J 42194 into the differential housing, behind the left bearing race, in order to remove the bearing race and shim.
25. Position the housing into a hydraulic press.



26. Using a hydraulic press, remove the race (104) and shim or shims (103) from the differential housing. Mark or tag the shims for assembly.
