GM Service Manual Online
For 1990-2009 cars only

The driver information center (DIC) displays the driver identifier greeting for 5 seconds when it first powers up. When the instrument panel cluster (IPC) power mode is ON, the DIC displays the last message displayed or the last vehicle information selected by the driver when the IPC was powered down. The IPC stores up to 3 DIC page settings and English/Metric units for Driver #1, Driver #2 and an unknown driver. The DIC displays the last page that a particular driver was using before power down.

There are 4 buttons at the DIC switch.

Information

Press this button to display fuel and other vehicle information such as:

    • Fuel Range
    • Average Fuel Economy
    • Instantaneous Fuel Economy

Fuel Range

This message indicates the estimated distance that the vehicle can travel under the current fuel economy and fuel level conditions. Fuel Range is calculated using the equation: Fuel Range = Distance Sum/Fuel Sum.

    • Distance Sum = The accumulated distance travelled since the last reset of this value.
    • Fuel Sum = The accumulated fuel delivered since the last reset of this value

The ECM sends the fuel range value to the instrument panel cluster (IPC). The instrument panel cluster (IPC) receives serial data messages from the ECM indicating the fuel level. The fuel range value is retained during ignition OFF and can be changed between English and Metric units by selecting English or Metric unit from the driver information center (DIC). The Fuel Range display cannot be reset. Whenever the calculated fuel range is less than 64 Km/h (39.8 miles) RANGE-LOW is displayed.

Average Fuel Economy

Average fuel economy is calculated using the equation: AFE = Distance/Fuel

    • Distance = The accumulated distance travelled since the last reset of this value
    • Fuel = The accumulated fuel consumption since the last reset of this value

The ECM sends the cumulative fuel usage information average fuel economy to the IPC. The instrument panel cluster (IPC) receives serial data message from the ECM regarding fuel usage information. The value of this mode is retained during ignition OFF and can be changed between English units and metric units by selecting English or Metric unit from the driver information center (DIC).

Instantaneous Fuel Economy (IFE)

Instantaneous fuel economy (IFE) is calculated using the equation: IFE = Distance/Fuel.

    • Distance = The accumulated distance travelled for the last 2 seconds
    • Fuel = The accumulated fuel delivered for the last 2 seconds

The instrument panel cluster (IPC) receives fuel level information serial data messages from the ECM. The distance information is calculated by the IPC using the vehicle speed information from the ECM. These values are retained during ignition OFF and can be changed between English and Metric units by selecting English or Metric unit from the driver information center (DIC). The IFE display cannot be reset.

Tire Pressure: This display shows the tire pressure for each tire.

Press the information button to display the tire pressure for the front tires, such as:

    • FRONT TIRE PRESSURES L 34 PSI R 33 PSI or
    • FRONT TIRE PRESSURES L 234 kPa R 228 kPa

Press the information button to display the tire pressure for the rear tires, such as:

    • REAR TIRE PRESSURES L 34 PSI R 33 PSI or
    • REAR TIRE PRESSURES L 234 kPa R 228 kPa
Odometer: The odometer information is calculated by the instrument panel cluster (IPC) from the vehicle speed signal input. The odometer shows how far your vehicle has been driven in either miles or kilometers. Press the INFO button to display odometer readings, such as:

    • ODOMETER 12345 MI or
    • ODOMETER 20008 km

The odometer can be displayed by turning on the parking lamps.

Trip Odometers: There are two trip odometers. Press the TRIP button to display TRIP ODOMETER A readings and press the button again to display TRIP ODOMETER B readings, such as:

    • TRIP ODOMETER A 130.5 MI or
    • TRIP ODOMETER A 209.9 km
    • TRIP ODOMETER B 300.5 MI or
    • TRIP ODOMETER B 483.5 km

Both of the trip odometers can be used simultaneously. TRIP A could be used to track the distance to a destination. TRIP B could be used to track maintenance periods. The trip odometers can be reset by pressing the RESET button on the DIC.

There is also a miles since last ignition feature that displays the number of miles (kilometers) driven since you last started the vehicle. Press and hold the RESET button for three seconds, then release it. The miles (kilometers) since the last ignition cycle will be set into the trip odometer.

Elapsed Time: Press the information button until ELAPSED TIME is displayed, such as ELAPSED TIMER .00.

When the ignition is in on, the DIC can be used as a stopwatch. The display can show hours, minutes and seconds. The elapsed time indicator will record up to 23 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds, then it will reset to zero and continue counting.

You can start or stop the elapsed time by pressing the RESET button. To reset the elapsed time to zero, press the RESET button for three seconds while the timer is displayed.

Average Speed: The IPC calculates the average speed in miles travelled per hour of ignition-on time. Press the information button until the average speed is displayed, such as:

    • AVERAGE SPEED 62 MPH or
    • AVERAGE SPEED 100 km/h

Press and hold the RESET button to reset to 0.0 mph (km/h).

Engine Oil Life: Press the information button until the engine oil life is displayed, such as OIL LIFE REMAINING 89%.

This is an estimate of the engine oil's remaining useful life. It will show 100% when the system is reset after an oil change. The oil life monitor alerts you to change your oil on a schedule consistent with your driving conditions. When the remaining oil life is low, the system will alert you with the message CHANGE ENGINE OIL.

Reset the engine oil life system yourself after each oil change. Refer to GM Oil Life System Resetting .

Units: Press the information button until units is displayed and use the reset button to change the displayed units between English or Metric units.
