DEFINITION: Windshield wipers are inoperative in one or more modes.

Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle?

  1. Turn ON the ignition.
  2. Attempt to operate the windshield wipers in all modes.

Do the windshield wipers operate normally in HIGH position?

Important: In the INT position the wipers operate only if the outside moisture sensor detects moisture on the windshield.

  1. Turn ON the ignition.
  2. Attempt to operate the windshield wipers in LOW, MIST, and INT modes.

Do the windshield wipers operate normally in all positions?

Did the windshield wipers operate in any of the above positions tested?

  1. Turn ON the ignition.
  2. Attempt to operate the windshield washer function.

Do the windshield wipers operate normally for several cycles?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the outside moisture sensor.
  3. Connect a test lamp between B+ and windshield washer switch signal at outside moisture sensor connector.
  4. Depress the wash button of the windshield wiper/washer switch.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Repair the open in windshield washer switch signal circuit between the outside moisture sensor and underhood fuse block. Refer to Connector Repairs .

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the WIPER ON/OFF relay.
  3. Connect a test lamp between the windshield wiper motor relay coil supply voltage circuit at the relay and B+.
  4. Turn ON the ignition.
  5. Turn the windshield wiper/washer switch to LOW position.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the outside moisture sensor.
  3. Connect a test lamp between accessory voltage and ground circuit at outside moisture sensor connector.
  4. Turn ON the ignition.

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Test the windshield wiper motor relay coil supply voltage circuit for an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Connector Repairs .

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Test the accessory voltage circuit for an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Connector Repairs .

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Test the ground circuit of the outside moisture sensor for an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Connector Repairs .

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the windshield wiper motor.
  3. Connect a test lamp between the windshield wiper motor low speed control circuit of the windshield wiper motor connector and a good ground.
  4. Turn ON the ignition.
  5. Turn the windshield wiper/washer switch to LOW position.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the WIPER HI/LO relay.
  3. Test the windshield wiper motor low speed control circuit for an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Connector Repairs .

  1. Disconnect the outside moisture sensor.
  2. Disconnect the windshield wiper/washer switch.
  3. Test the windshield wiper switch low signal circuit for high resistance.

Did you find and correct the condition?

  1. Test the resistance from the windshield wiper switch low signal circuit to the ground circuit in the windshield wiper/washer switch.
  2. Operate the windshield wiper/washer switch in all of the delay positions.

Does the resistance remain within the specified values and decrease as the delay speed is increased?

300ohms-4Kohms

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the WIPER HI/LO relay.
  3. Connect a test lamp between the coil supply voltage circuit of the WIPER HI/LO relay and a good ground.
  4. Turn ON the ignition.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Repair the coil supply voltage circuit of the WIPER HI/LO relay for an open.

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Connect a test lamp between the coil supply voltage circuit and the control circuit of the WIPER HI/LO relay.
  3. Turn ON the ignition.
  4. Turn the windshield wiper/washer switch to HIGH position.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the windshield wiper/washer switch.
  3. Test the WIPER HI/LO relay control circuit for an open.

Did you find and correct the condition?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Reconnect the WIPER HI/LO relay.
  3. Disconnect the windshield wiper motor.
  4. Connect a test lamp between windshield wiper motor high speed control circuit of the windshield wiper motor connector and a good ground.
  5. Turn ON the ignition.
  6. Turn the windshield wiper/washer circuit to HIGH position.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Test the windshield wiper motor high speed control circuit between WIPER HI/LO relay and windshield wiper motor for an open.
