DTC U2153: Navigation Electronic Control Unit (ECU) - VICS Communication Circuit
Circuit Description
The traffic information receiver is available on export vehicles only and is dealer installed. The traffic information receiver is supplied with battery voltage from the RADIO S-BAND/VICS fuse located in the body control module (BCM). The traffic information
receiver communicates with the navigation radio over 3 circuits. These are the vehicle identification communication system (VICS) bus request signal circuit, the VCIS high (+) signal circuit, and the VCIS low (-) signal circuit. The traffic information
receiver is supplied ground at ground G104.
Conditions for Running the DTC
• | Battery voltage must be between 9-16 volts. |
Conditions for Setting the DTC
There is no response from the traffic information receiver module when queried by the navigation radio after successfully initializing the system.
The navigation radio does not receive information from the traffic information receiver module when the radio detects a power mode transition to ON.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
The traffic information receiver selection is not available on the navigation system menu.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
The condition responsible for setting the DTC no longer exists.

Circuit/System Testing
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the traffic information receiver.
- Ignition OFF, test for less than 5 ohms between the traffic information receiver ground circuit terminal 5 and ground.
⇒ | If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for and open/high resistance. |
- Verify that a test lamp illuminates between the B+ circuit terminal 3 and ground.
⇒ | If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the B+ circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. |
- Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the accessory voltage circuit terminal 4 and ground.
⇒ | If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the voltage circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM. |
- Connect the harness connector at the traffic information receiver.
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the X3 harness connector at the radio.
- Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the request signal circuit terminal 2 and ground.
⇒ | If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the traffic information receiver. |
- Verify that a test lamp illuminates between the high signal circuit terminal 3 and ground.
⇒ | If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the traffic information receiver. |
- Verify that a test lamp illuminates between the low signal circuit terminal 6 and ground.
⇒ | If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the traffic information receiver. |
- Verify that a test lamp illuminates between B+ and the drain wire circuit terminal 5 and ground.
⇒ | If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the drain wire circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the traffic information receiver. |
- If all circuits test normal, replace the radio.
