FRONT DOOR RATTLE DUE TO BROKEN SPOT WELDS

Model and Year: 1985-89 M-VAN

Some 1985 through 1989 Ml Vans may experience a rattle in the front doors. This condition may result if the spot welds used to secure the front door window glass rear guide channel to the inside of the door frame separate.

If the window glass rear guide channel spot welds have separated, the channel can be resecured using the following procedure.

REPLACEMENT AND INSTALLATION PROCEDURE: (REFER TO FIGURE 1.)

1. Roll the window completely up. 2. Unfasten two armrest retaining screws and remove the armrest. 3. If the vehicle is equipped with manual windows, remove the window handle retaining clip using Kent-Moore tool J09886-01, and remove the handle. 4. Remove the door panel screw. 5. Loosen the ten door plastic trim panel retainers using Kent-Moore Moore tool J24595-B. 6. If the vehicle is equipped with power door locks and/or power windows disconnect the electrical connectors. 7. Remove the door trim panel. 8. Carefully cut the paper water deflector around the armrest bracket and pull it back out of the way. 9. Center punch the three rear channel bracket retaining spot welds located on the outside of the door jamb. 10. Position and hold the window rear guide channel bracket in its original location and drill through the door and channel bracket at one of the previously center punched weld locations using a #11 drill. Install a 3/16" diameter protruding head, stainless steel rivet PIN 2075926, or equivalent (stainless steel rivet must be used for corrosion resistance. 11. Drill out the remaining two spot welds and install a rivet in each hole, as outlined in Step #10. 12. Install ten new plastic door trim retainers P/N 15600382 on the door trim panel. 13. Reconnect any electrical connectors for power locks or power windows if previously removed and install the door trim panel. 14. Reinstall the door panel screw. 15. If the vehicle is equipped with manual windows, reinstall the window handle and retaining clip. 16. Reinstall the armrest using the two screws previously removed.
