General Motors has determined that certain 1992 Astro Van model vehicles (Rear Wheel Drive and All-Wheel Drive) were built with the transmission dipstick tube assembly shorter than engineering print specifications. This condition could cause a properly filled transmission to indicate an overfilled reading on the dipstick. if the transmission were to be filled to the operating range indicated on the dipstick, transmission slippage (primarily when the transmission fluid is cold) and shortened transmission life may occur. All of the transmissions were properly filled in production except for a one month period when they were filled to the operating range on the dipstick.
To correct these conditions, a new dipstick which matches the existing tube length will be sent to all owners of record. Additionally, those owners with underfilled transmissions will be asked to return to their dealership to have the transmission fluid level inspected and adjusted as necessary.
Involved are certain 1992 Astro Van model vehicles (Rear Wheel Drive and All-Wheel Drive) built within the following VIN breakpoints:
PLANT YEAR MODEL PLANT CODE FROM THROUGH ---- ----- ----- ----- ---- ------- 1992 M/L Baltimore "B" NB100001 NB151054
1992 M/L Baltimore "B" NB165703 NB185411
Certain vehicles built between the following VIN breakpoints will also need to have the transmission fluid level inspected and adjusted (see Notice below) if necessary:
VEHICLES REQUIRING NEW DIPSTICK & TRANS. FLUID LEVEL INSPECTION --------------------------------------------------------------- PLANT YEAR MODEL PLANT CODE FROM THROUGH ---- ----- ----- ----- ---- ------- 1992 M/L Baltimore "B" NB151055 NB165702
The specific vehicles involved in this portion of the campaign have been identified by Vehicle Identification Number Computer Listings. These listings are furnished to all involved dealers with the campaign bulletin. Retain this listing, as these vehicles WILL NOT appear on future follow-up listings.
The Vehicle Identification Number Computer Listings being provided are to enable dealers to follow-up with owners involved in this campaign (after July 31, 1992). These listings may contain owner names and addresses obtained from State Motor Vehicle Registration Records. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any other purpose is a violation of law in several states. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this listing to the follow-up necessary to complete this campaign.
Owners will be notified of this campaign on their vehicles by Chevrolet Motor Division (see copy of owner letter included with this bulletin). owners are being instructed to call CAC if they encounter problems in receiving their dipstick.
Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.
Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new or used vehicle inventory, or it is in your dealership for service in the future, you should take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before reselling or releasing the vehicle.
Owners of vehicles recently sold from your new vehicle inventory are to be contacted by the dealer, and arrangements made to make the required correction according to instructions contained in this bulletin.
A new transmission fluid level indicator and installation instructions will be mailed to owners of record by Chevrolet Motor Division on a no charge basis.
The parts required to complete this campaign for vehicles in your inventory (stock units) should be obtained from General Motors Service Parts Operations (GMSPO). To ensure these parts will be obtained as soon as possible, they should be ordered from GMSPO on a "C.I.O." order with no special instruction code, but on an advise code (2). Dear Chevrolet Astro Van Owner:
This notice is sent to inform you that Chevrolet Motor Division is conducting a recall campaign that includes your vehicle.
REASON FOR THIS RECALL
General Motors has determined that certain 1992 Astro Vans (Rear Wheel Drive and All-Wheel Drive) were built with the transmission dipstick tube assembly shorter than engineering print specifications. This condition could cause a properly filled transmission to indicate an overfilled reading on the dipstick. If the transmission were to be filled to the operating range indicated on the dipstick, transmission slippage (primarily when the transmission fluid is cold) and shortened transmission life may occur. Your transmission was properly filled in production.
WHAT WE WILL DO
To correct the above conditions, a new dipstick which matches the existing tube length has been designed. Since the new dipstick can be easily installed, and for your convenience, the dipstick, along with installation instructions, is being sent directly to you (owner of record). The instructions for installing the dipstick are enclosed with this letter. You may install the dipstick yourself, or you may ask your dealer to do the service at no charge to you.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
If it is necessary, please contact your Chevrolet dealer as soon as possible to arrange a service date. Instructions for making this correction have been sent to your dealer. Please ask your dealer if you wish to know how much time will be needed to schedule, process and repair your vehicle.
If you should encounter any problem in receiving the dipstick, please contact the Chevrolet Customer Assistance Center by calling 1-800-222-1020. When calling please provide your complete name, complete address and Vehicle Identification Number (as printed on the enclosed owner reply card).
The enclosed postage paid owner reply card identifies your vehicle. Please complete the card to indicate the campaign repair has been completed. If the dealer performs the repair, presentation of the card to your dealer will assist in making the necessary correction in the shortest possible time. If you have sold or traded your vehicle, please let us know by completing the postage paid reply card and returning it to us.
We appreciate your cooperation and are sorry to cause you this inconvenience; however, we have taken this action in the interest of your continued satisfaction with our products.
INSTALLATION OF TRANSMISSION FLUID DIPSTICK
1. LOCATE VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER (VIN) PLATE. It appears in the front corner of the instrument panel on the driver's side. The VIN plate can be seen if you look through the windshield from outside of the vehicle. The eighth character (from left) is your engine code. THIS CHARACTER WILL BE A "Z" OR "W".
2. Open your vehicle's hood.
3. Locate transmission fluid level dipstick which is near the front of the engine compartment wall. The dipstick has a black T-shaped handle marked "TRANS FLUID".
Figure 1 shows location of dipstick if 8th character of your VIN is a "Z".
Figure 2 shows location of dipstick if 8th character of your VIN is a "W".
4. Remove old dipstick from fill tube and dispose of it.
5. Wipe new dipstick clean and insert new dipstick all of the way into transmission fill tube.
6. Close vehicle's hood.
7. Check "Campaign Completed By Owner" box on enclosed postage paid reply card and return the card to us.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
