Problem

Action

Air is present in the system.

  1. Add power steering fluid to the power steering reservoir. Refer to Checking and Adding Power Steering Fluid .
  2. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
  3. Inspect the hose connectors for proper torque. Refer to Fastener Tightening Specifications .

The steering gear mounting is loose.

Tighten the attaching bolts to the specified torque. Refer to Fastener Tightening Specifications .

The steering linkage joints are worn.

Inspect and replace any loose parts, if necessary. Refer to Steering Linkage Inspection in Steering Linkage.

The front wheel bearings are incorrectly adjusted or worn.

Adjust or replace the bearings, as necessary. Refer to Wheel Bearing Adjustment in Front Suspension.

The steering gear is improperly adjusted.

  1. Check the worm thrust bearing preload and adjust if necessary. Refer to Steering Gear Worm Gear Thrust Bearing Preload Adjustment - Off Vehicle .
  2. Check the pitman shaft over-center preload and adjust if necessary. Refer to Steering Gear Pitman Shaft Over-Center Preload Adjustment - Off Vehicle .

Worn or damaged steering gear.

Replace the steering gear. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement .
