Problem

Action

Air in the power steering fluid and fluid loss due to internal pump leakage resulting in overflow.

  1. Inspect the power steering system for leaks and repair, as necessary. Refer to External Leakage Check .
  2. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
  3. Extremely cold temperatures will cause system aeration if the oil level is low. Check and add power steering fluid, if necessary. Refer to Checking and Adding Power Steering Fluid .
  4. If the oil level is correct and the pump still foams, remove the pump from the vehicle and separate the reservoir from the housing.
  5. Check the welsh plug and the housing for cracks. If the plug is loose or the housing is cracked, replace the housing. Refer to Power Steering Fluid Reservoir Replacement - Off Vehicle .

Hose or air leakage in the reservoir line.

  1. Inspect the power steering hoses and reservoir hoses for leaks and repair, as necessary. Refer to External Leakage Check .
  2. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
  3. Extremely cold temperatures will cause system aeration if the oil level is low. Check and add power steering fluid, if necessary. Refer to Checking and Adding Power Steering Fluid .
