Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disconnect the antenna lead-in connector at the radio receiver.
  3. With a digital multimeter (DMMJ 39200 ), measure the resistance between the coax (outer conductor) radio and the negative battery cable.

Is the resistance less than the specified value?

0.15 ohms

  1. Grasp the antenna mast.
  2. Wiggle the antenna while observing the DMM.

Does the DMM indicate intermittent continuity?

Inspect the following connections:

    • The base of the antenna for a good connection to body ground
    • The coaxial cable interconnects for a poor connection or corrosion
    • The ground connection from the battery negative cable to the body ground.

Was a problem with the ground circuit found?

With a DMMJ 39200 , measure the resistance between the radio coaxial lead-in (center conductor) and the antenna mast.

Is the resistance less than 2 ohms for coax type RG-58 or RG-59, or less than 3.5 ohms for coax type RG-62 or RG-62M?

  1. Test the coaxial cable interconnects for a poor connection or corrosion.
  2. Repair or replace the antenna coaxial circuit, as needed.
