Verify the volt gauge is inaccurate or inoperative.

Does the volt gauge operate normally?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Remove the combs for the instrument cluster connector.
  3. Backprobe the instrument cluster connector with a J 39200 DMM and measure the voltage between the ignition 1 voltage circuit and ground with the instrument cluster connected.
  4. Compare the DC voltage reading on the J 39200 DMM and the voltmeter display on the cluster. Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.

Does the cluster and the DMM display the approximately the same values?
